REPORT TITLE: COMMUNITY BASED INTERVENTION AT THOOTHUKUDI

PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMILNADU, S.INDIA

CBDRM PROGRAMME AT ANNA COLONY, THOOTHUKUDI

Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) intervention training and training programme was convened at Anna Colony area of flood affected, Thoothukudi Corporation. With the presidentship of Asso. Prof. CAS in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, and in the presence of State Co-ordinator, Govt. of India, MPEDA, Net Fish and also Director CRS. Self Help Women Groups of that area participated in this programme. “When a disaster is formed how shall we protect ourselves? How can we protect others during that occasion?” For the above said questions explanation was given in detail. It was also explained in what manner the vulnerable community in that flood affected area could be for warned through the P.A. system and by making Drum Voice etc. What are the safety measures and where are the evacuation routes? Those also must be announced to the disaster affected victims. In addition to this, at first must try to protect vulnerable community such as, women, Children, pregnant women, aged persons and alternative skilled etc. Also we must have known the contact phone numbers of Disaster Recovery Team, Fire Service Dept., Communication Dept., District Collector etc. We must inform the Condition about the victims of the Disaster to them and they must be accommodated at safety places, locations in higher area, school building, community centre, temple campus etc. When a person gets injured and has a fracture at his hand, at first we must make a phone call to Ambulance. Then the fractured hand must be structured straight. At the bottom of the stretched hand we must keep the two straight sticks or foot scales at the top and bottom of the hand and tie those with the help of a cloth with us and make a bandage. After this bandage making, we must make a cradle like arrangement and we must make keep the hand in hanging condition. If anybody is found in the unconscious condition at first we must make a phone call to bring Ambulance there and we must check the concerned person’s pulse. If we are unable to know anything we must check his heart beat by keeping our ear upon his chest. If this check up is also failed we shall keep our fingers near his nostrils. If it is also failed to find the condition of the disaster affected person, we can keep any cloth of the unconscious person unto his mouth and we shall below air from our mouth into his mouth. So he can have the artificial respiration and will come to the conscious stage. Then we can take him to the hospital. If he feels unable to walk we can spread any Bed Sheet upon the floor and roll on a little measure of Bed Sheet on length wise and on 4 corners of the Bed Sheet 4 person a carry the disaster affected person (like a stretcher) or we can carry him into the ambulance. All these were demonstrated practically.

 CBDRM PROGRAMME AT ALANGARATHATTU, THOOTHUKUDI

Through the Global Giving aided project, our NGO conducted training at East Alangarathattu area of Thoothukudi Corporation, Disaster Management Explanation and Demonstration Training Programme was held for women Self Help Group Members. Explanation was also given in detail.

What is Disaster? Normally hindrances are occurred to every man. During the time of cooking food women may meet some fire accidents. Because of our carelessness some minor accidents we may meet or when we walk on the side of a road we may be hunted in our leg. There are the possibilities for us to meet accidents when we go by bi-cycle or by motor cycle unexpectedly. We may meet any accident. We may get fracture in our hand or leg. During that occasion First Aid is a necessary one. If the first aid is not done so, the bleeding may exceed and it may cause fatal effect to the life. That is why it is necessary for the members of the Self Help Women Group to know about the First Aided in detail. On the basis of that First Aid Demonstration Training was convened. This was demonstrated by co-ordinator Chevalier Roche Society (Derose Centre) staff. If somebody fell down and had a bone fracture and bleeding in his hand, what shall we do at first? At first we must stop the bleeding. Upon the bone fracture made on hand small sticks or foot seals in equal length shall be kept up and down on hand and tie with the bandage cloth or any clean cloth available at home. Then that hand shall not be hanged down. By using a cloth it can be surrounded the fractured hand and tied like a cradle to hold the hand in horizontal position. Then the hand fractured person can be taken to the hospital. If somebody is hunted on the leg and unable to walk we shall not help him to walk. During that occasion two persons may help him by joining both of their hands in a chair like form and the injured person may be seated upon that and we carry him to the place of protection and then to the hospital as carry as possible. If a person is found in unconscious condition we can make a stretcher like a form with help of bed sheet or Blanket. At first the bed sheet shall be spread on the floor. Following that in the lengthy manner the bed sheet shall be rolled a little. After that along with the injured person Bed Sheet can be carried in a stretcher like form by four persons on four corners of the bed sheet. At the end of this Disaster Management Programme. Member of the Self Help Group delivered the vote of thanks.
