The diverse Middle Eastern cultures, including Jewish, Arabic and other cultures, have enriched each other over millennia. Located at the center of this vast region, Israel is a unique crossroads between these musical cultures and traditions. Diverse and reciprocal influences have contributed to the creation of an authentic genre of Israeli World Music and art music. In this respect, the Maqamat Center aspires to support values of multicultural harmony and mutual respect. The Center's mission is to provide professional and community educational programs and activities to advance learning, professional development and public support of the field of international and Israeli eastern music. The Maqamat Academy of Eastern Music, a core activity of the Center, offers an extensive diploma program with highly recognized teachers in the field. The Center also offers public activities such as concerts, workshops with national and international masters, and special public events, including master-classes. About 70 students are presently enrolled in the 3-year academic diploma program and an additional 50 students in supplemental and casual learning programs. Each year the Center sponsors at least 20 public events or programs that have attracted several thousand participants. The Maqamat Center is recognized nationally and internationally in the field of Middle Eastern music and culture. Eastern Music has traditionally been an important component of Middle Eastern culture as reflected in daily life. Over the years this traditional culture has been pushed aside, and we are working to preserve it today, through its study, preservation and propagation for future generations. This musical culture serves as a bridge between diverse populations in Israel (and abroad) including different ethnic and national groups, secular/religious, young/old, East/West.
