You Are Nang's Protector

Your gifts are helping keep Nang safe.
Your gifts are helping keep Nang safe.

Your gifts protect girls near the Thai border in Laos, keeping them safe at home, and safe from traffickers. Because of you, they’re learning about the danger on the other side of the border, and are learning vital skills to stay safe.

The village where Nang lives is just a few miles from the border, making residents highly vulnerable to traffickers. It's not uncommon for men to visit poor villages along the Laos-Thailand border with deceptive offers of high paying jobs in restaurants or coffee shops. But their promises are lies designed to lure the desperately poor into the sex trade.

Nang has a sweet smile and so much potential. But she is at great risk, being at the vulnerable age when most girls quit school to work and help support their families.

“Poor families see only the opportunity, not the danger,” says Olive Orate, World Concern’s country director in Laos. Roughly a third of children from this region end up as sex workers. Many from Nang’s village have gone to Thailand and never returned.

That’s where you come in. With your help, Nang and other young girls in her village are involved in our youth center where they participate in drama workshops that teach them to identify traffickers’ lies. Now, when Nang hears about a job in a coffee shop or restaurant in Thailand, she will know it’s a lie—a trap to lure her across the border and into slavery.

She’s also taking classes to learn skills, like sewing, hairstyling, and jewelry making that enable her to help support her family safely at home. With you as her protector, Nang’s future looks brighter. She and her friends see opportunities right here at home, where they are safe. And with your help, that’s where they’ll stay.

Your gift is keeping Madut's kids warm and safe

You helped provide emergency supplies for Madut.
You helped provide emergency supplies for Madut.

Madut will never forget the night he fled his home in Unity State, South Sudan. The 55-year-old father was only able to grab his children and a few clothing items as they ran.

“There were bullet shots everywhere,” he recalls with fear in his voice. “I and my family were lucky. We ran to the police station, and from there, we made it by foot to Lietnhom.”

That’s where Madut met World Concern staff who are assisting displaced families like his, with support from donors like you.

Madut has been feeding his family by weeding people’s farms for a meager wage. They have nothing, and nowhere to go. “Where do I go? People are still being killed,” he said. He and his family are among more than 1.5 million people who have been displaced by the fighting in South Sudan since December.

With your help, Madut received emergency supplies for his family to survive, including blankets, mosquito nets, soap, and other necessities.

“My children and my wife will be safe from cold and from malaria,” he said. “I’m very grateful to World Concern for this support.”

Without your generous gifts, we would not be able to reach families like Madut’s who have lost everything in the crisis in South Sudan. Thank you.

How your gift changed the course of a child's life

Your gift helps hearing impaired students learn.
Your gift helps hearing impaired students learn.

Your gifts have made such a difference in the lives of hearing impaired children in Bangladesh. Without support from donors like you, 105 children would not have learned to communicate with their families and at school.

Each one the 105 students who were enrolled in World Concern’s Hear School this year received specialized training and attention aimed at helping them communicate and transition into public schools.

Young Jaman could not make any verbal sounds before coming to the Hear School. But after receiving patient, compassionate care from the trained teachers, he started pronouncing words within a very short time.

Jaman’s mom followed the advice she received at the parent classes and very quickly began communicating with her son. With support at school, home, and with the help of hearing aids, Jaman was speaking in sentences in no time. Even neighbors have stopped by their home, astonished and thrilled to hear Jaman speak.

More than two million people in Bangladesh suffer from hearing impairment. But only 2,500 spots are available in specialized schools, leaving most deaf children little chance to learn to communicate. You’re helping change that.

New students are being enrolled each year. Our audiology centers in Mymensingh, Barisal, and Bhairab provided diagnostic tests to 1,532 children and adults last year, with your help!

And it’s not just the Hear School students who are being helped. Entire families are being transformed. This school year, 1,393 parents attended weekly parent classes to learn how to communicate with their hearing impaired children and how to support them in school.

Your gift lasts well into the future, changing the course of a child’s life forever. Mohammad Billah, a former student at the Mymensingh Hear School, was recently admitted to university to study fine arts. This would not have been possible without the specialized training and caring support he received from the Hear School.

Your gift is opening up a world of hearing to children in Bangladesh. Thank you for helping transform lives!
