Map Kibera started in 2009 when a group of youth came together to put Kibera on the map. It was a blank spot in the government map, until they produced the first digital map of Kibera using OpenStreetMap. The team then expanded the mapping to include citizen journalism, and Kibera News Network was created. This helped to give the Kibera community a platform to air their voices and speak out about the issues affecting them, which have been highlighted by the maps.
