SBP is a nationally recognized disaster resilience and recovery organization whose mission is to shrink the time between disaster and recovery. Founded in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina, SBP has grown from a three-person volunteer team to an organization with more than 80 employees and 240 AmeriCorps members. While we can't prevent natural disasters, we believe we can prevent some of the suffering that comes with them. To accomplish this, SBP has identified five critical interventions that range from addressing pressing, individual rebuilding needs to systemic advocacy that will change the way disaster-recovery is managed. These interventions comprise our comprehensive disaster resilience and recovery platform and are designed to fortify disaster-impacted families against reaching their breaking point. The interventions are: 1. Rebuild homes by leveraging the expertise of AmeriCorps members and in-kind labor from thousands of volunteers from across the country. SBP prioritizes rebuilding for low-to-moderate-income households, including families with small children, the elderly, disabled persons, and veterans. To date, SBP has returned 1,800+ families home. 2. Share knowledge and resources with other non-profit rebuilding groups to raise their capacity and efficacy, therefore increasing both volume and production. To date, SBP has trained 253 groups. 3. Prepare individuals and communities, both before and after disasters, to proactively identify and mitigate risks to life, safety, property, and finances. SBP provides tools and resources to help families prepare for disasters and navigate the post-disaster landscape. 4. Advise policymakers after disasters so they can deploy federal dollars sooner, and in a way that empowers an efficient recovery. 5. Advocate for large-scale change to the disaster industry to increase speed, predictability, and access to resources through policy, technology, and financial innovations.
