Stronger, Smarter, Bolder: Girls Take the Lead

I’m thrilled to share Stronger, Smarter, Bolder: Girls Take the Lead with you. Positioned against the backdrop of a set of critical issues facing girls in the US and Canada, this report highlights results from a new evaluation study from the American Institutes for Research that shows that girls who receive the supports offered by Girls Inc. have a significant advantage over their peers who do not participate in Girls Inc. programming.

Through a two-year, quasi-experimental research study that compared girls in Girls Inc. with a similar group of non-participating girls, researchers determined that regardless of demographic, academic, and social characteristics, girls who participated in Girls Inc. were outpacing their peers in multiple areas of success and were more likely to:

  • See themselves as leaders, with the skills and capabilities to influence and improve their local communities.

  • Have higher standardized math test scores and self-confidence in STEM subjects, and see themselves in STEM careers.

  • Be engaged in and attend school, less likely to be suspended, and be prepared for life after high school.

  • Exercise regularly and participate in sports teams.

Stronger, Smarter, Bolder: Girls Take the Lead seeks to clarify some of the key challenges that girls face, especially girls of color, offering recommendations about the kinds of supports and experiences that help girls push past those obstacles. There is no question: when girls are healthier physically and emotionally, when they possess intellectual tools and persistence, when they feel confident engaging with others and know how to stand up and speak out—then girls succeed.

As our partner in this work, I want to thank you for investing in girls. Together, we are creating the conditions girls need to overcome systemic societal challenges and become strong leaders by providing mentoring relationships, encouraging girls to develop and use their voices, developing a positive self-image, and fostering intellectual confidence.

Thank you for providing girls with the fundamental opportunities, resources, and supports that help them realize their extraordinary potential. You can access Stronger, Smarter, Bolder here.

Girls Inc.: Your Investment at Work

Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg is the most recent of the young women at whose courage the world marvels. She and her sisters Malala Yousafzai, Emma Gonzalez, and Yara Shahidi—to name but a few—have sought allies, overcome personal obstacles, faced impossible challenges, and committed themselves to taking action in highly visible arenas. Each has a different goal, but they are working toward a unified outcome: a more rational, thoughtful, inclusive, equitable world.

These young women represent a future in which we are not satisfied simply to compensate successfully in any given situation, but we instead work intelligently toward improving the conditions that create the need to compensate. As I watch their progress, I am incredibly proud to be leading the work at Girls Inc., where every day we work with girls who have the same extraordinary potential.

Because you have invested in that potential, Girls Inc. girls have safe, positive, pro-girl environments in which to explore their inherent strengths and talents. Thanks to your generous support, they have trained, caring mentors who guide and challenge them as they set and achieve goals—from physical and emotional health to high academic performance and self-determination. And your investment is behind them as they broaden their outlook and reach, using the sisterhood and the power they have found in the Girls Inc. Experience to advocate and legislate on behalf of girls and women everywhere. Girls Inc. girls are not only navigating successfully in a sometimes-unaccommodating world, but they are also changing the world for the better.

On behalf of all of us at Girls Inc., I thank you for your confidence in these strong, smart, bold girls, and for your investment in the powerful future that they are creating.

Girls Inc.: Your Investment at Work & Important Announcement

Girls Inc. has been changing the lives of girls for over 150 years, and I am honored to have been chosen to continue this legacy as I join the organization this month.

This new role weaves together many threads of my previous experience. I have devoted much of my career to advancing and supporting girls and young women, as well as ensuring access to excellence in high-need communities. From serving as a faculty member and administrator at women’s colleges (Wellesley and Mount Holyoke) to leading the Brearley School to addressing the challenges of STEM learning in high-need schools at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, I have been committed to opportunity and achievement for young people, and especially young women. Now I am delighted to share my enthusiasm for this work with Girls Inc., on behalf of our strong, smart, and bold girls.

As I begin my journey with Girls Inc., I am very pleased to announce to you another new leadership appointment: Tony Bucci, a valued member of our National Board of Directors since 2008 and previous Vice-Chair, will be stepping into the role of Board Chair. Tony is Chairman and CEO of MARC USA, one of the nation’s largest privately held marketing communications companies. Tony has often brought the talents and resources of his agency and his personal enthusiasm to our collateral, from the “With You In Her Corner” campaign to our newly designed, mobile-friendly, website. Widely recognized for his high-level thinking, strategic marketing expertise, and philanthropic efforts, Tony was a natural choice to lead Girls Inc.’s Board, and I am so pleased that he has agreed to take on this key position. I look forward to our work together.

I would also like to thank Judy Vredenburgh for all of her advice and support as I step into this important new role. All of us at Girls Inc. are tremendously grateful for her transformative leadership, which has created a solid foundation for our future plans and goals.

It is a privilege and a pleasure to be leading an organization that I have admired for many years. I will continue with pride the Girls Inc. traditions of transformational programming for the girls who need us most, and transparency and accountability to you, our important investors. Thank you for helping Girls Inc. make certain that all girls have the opportunity to grow up healthy, educated, and independent.

With all best wishes,

Stephanie J. Hull, Ph.D.
President & CEO
