Inauguration of NDLM centre- Kothrud, Pune
Inauguration of NDLM centre- Kothrud, Pune

Dear Supporters ,

With Greetings for the festival of lights – Diwali – we are happy to present an impact report on the Digital literacy project of IDEA . The second part of this report is the feedback given by an young  girl about her mother .

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have accelerated economic growth and propelled a wave of engagements that have touched human lives; changing the way communities interact, increasing opportunities for livelihood and crossing the barriers of inequitable growth. ICTs have taken up such pre-eminence in our everyday lives, that we now have access to a bank of knowledge & services at our fingertips. As a result, people in tune with ICTs are no longer isolated and are part of the fast changing global platform. However, there are still millions who are yet to gain access to the ICT platforms for knowledge and opportunities.

In order to reiterate the importance of Digital Literacy, Government of India has undertaken a flagship programme called  National Digital Literacy Mission ( NDLM ) which is aligned to the Government of India’s vision of making one person in each household in the country digitally literate by 2020.

IDEA already implementing Digital Literacy programs for the poor , decided to strengthen it by opening centers exclusively for this purpose . One center started in Bopkhel , Pune in July 2015  funded by Tata Communications Limited . With partial support from Symantec Software company we inaugurated another center in October 2015.

Digital Literacy Classes are open for children, youth and men and women . Course includes 40 hours of training to build capacity to find, understand, assess and examine information using digital technology based devices (i.e. computers, mobile phones and tablets). Thus Digital literacy involves a working knowledge and an understanding of how these devices can be used.

So far around 60 students, most of them are women have completed the course and are confident to access to a bank of knowledge & services at their fingertips

Rekha’s story

My name is Anita , I have been supported by IDEA under the Educational Sponsorship program. My mother Rekha shifted to Pune City from a remote village in Maharashtra after her marriage. Studied only upto grade  6 she had no choice other than taking a maidservant’s job to reduce the financial burden on my father  . My father too studied only upto grade 8 and works as a casual laborer in a company . I have three more siblings , me and my elder sister are undergraduate students while our younger siblings are in high school classes . My parents find it difficult to meet our educational expenses so we had approached IDEA for assistance to meet our educational expenses . It is a great relive for parents that major part of my educational expenses are met with a sponsorship support from IDEA, since last few years .

My mother used to attend art & craft sessions , awareness program and functional literacy classes arranged by the organization for women in our community . During one such session she understood about the ‘ Digital Literacy program ‘ . My mother enrolled for the class with hesitation , due to our continuous motivation . She felt like leaving it in between saying ‘ computer is too technical for me  to understand’ . Individual support & counselling from the teacher helped her to overcome her initial difficulty .

. A few months back ‘THANK YOU ‘ was the only English word my mother used to speak ! Today I am very proud of my mother , she can easily operate a ‘ smart phone ‘ and a computer . She has learnt many English words.

Dear friends I take this opportunity to say thanks for supporting IDEA’s projects for needy children and women like me and my mother .

Promise a better future

Felicitation Program
Felicitation Program

Dear donors,

Warm greetings from IDEA!

Every year we acknowledge efforts of all sponsored students passed in 10th and 12th in a Felicitation Program. This year, 25 students in 12th and 30 students in 10th were invited to be a part of celebration of their success in Std. 10th & 12th. 15 students in 10th and 4 students in 12th scored more than 70%. We took this opportunity to have a dialogue with them on how they want to shape up their career and plan for future. Dr. Shruti Panse, an educationist facilitated the session on ‘Multiple Intelligences’. Children could test their likes and dislikes and see its linkages to career decisions. 90 children were present for this program and liked the session very much as it was the right time to plan ahead. Children also presented dance performances during the program.

All these children have been struggling against the odds with the only wish to study further. According to our observation, most of the students find difficulties in Mathematics. Therefore, this year our focus is on providing them support in Mathematics. We facilitate coaching in Mathematics in our office. In spite of our efforts, some of them fail or drop out due to various reasons. For such children, we conduct vocational training program to provide them employment opportunity. This year, we took some of the drop out children in 3 communities for the visit to ICICI Academy for Skills where they offer vocational courses such as Office Administration, Sales Skills etc. Some of them have already enrolled for the course as the placement is guaranteed immediately after completion of the course.

Pooja is under IDEA’s sponsorship program from past 4 years. She comes from a very conservative community in which girls rarely get a chance to study after Std. 5th or 6th. Most of the girls in her community get married before attaining 18 years. We have been continuously conducting awareness programs and talking to the parents so that girls could act freely and explore opportunities for their development. There is a long way to go in this direction. But Pooja, one of the bright girls in that community has dared to step in the college. She is studying in 12th inspiring other girls to follow her path.

See her video here.

Thank you for being part of her journey. Please continue your support to bring many such girls in the mainstream. Bonus day is around the corner. Don’t miss an opportunity on 16th September to give them a promise that education will bring in their lives.

Carving an Artist

Products made by Deepali
Products made by Deepali

Dear donors,

Warm greetings!

IDEA provides a second chance of learning through skill based training for the young girls and women in slum communities so that they could start earning supplementary income by becoming entrepreneurs. Some of them pick the skill very well and become self starters. Deepali (name changed) is one of them. Read her story in her own words.

Deepali- An innovator

“I belong to a conservative community in India. I could not complete graduation because of early marriage. After marriage, I learnt Fashion Designing and then started stitching garments. My husband and my in-laws support me as they are not very conservative. I stay in a joint family and as far as I am fulfilling all my household responsibilities, I have no obligations from my family.  Initially, I used to spend my leisure time in stitching and making of imitation jewellery which I had learnt before. Then I came to know about the Art & craft course conducted by IDEA. I enrolled myself with a thought that I can spend my free time in learning something new. But this course gave me an insight of many new things which I was not aware of. First I learnt Paper quilling, different types of painting etc. Whenever I went in vacation at my mother’s place in my native, I got opportunity to explore my talent and creativity. I conducted Art & Craft classes over there. My art was highly appreciated by some foreign visitors and they placed order of paper quilling items. This boosted my confidence. I have sold 1000 rakhis last year. My work has a great demand. IDEA built confidence in me. I regularly work as an instructor for IDEA and feel proud of it”

Deepali has taught art & craft to 2 batches so far. Her creativity has no limit. She has recently made beautiful decorative paper hand bags. She gets orders for the same. She adds value to her products by researching on market products and makes them unique. She works on each item with an artistic view. It seems she has found a magic stone which makes all opportunities golden for her.

Thank you dear donors for enabling us to carve such creative girls out their shell. Bonus day is round the corner. It is on 16th September. Please do not forget to make your contribution. It is because of your support we continue our intervention for the neediest people. Thank you for being a part of empowerment of these women.
