OVERVIEW In 1998, Claudia IbarboGloyne, Colombian, with the support of her relatives, classmates and friends, started Fundacion Una Mano Amiga with the main objective to support the social work of the congregation Hijas de los Sagrados Corazones , a nonprofit organization that has three boarding schools for vulnerable girls, teenager girls and boys, one community school for dysfunctional and poor families, and an elderly home for abandoned and sick senior patients , all located in the town of Agua de Dios, Colombia, which was affected for decades by the scourge of leprosy and still faces its effects in many ways. Days before she had visited a resort located near Agua de Dios for the first time, and she heard a nun asking for donations for a Christmas party to be offered to poor children who needed to walk almost a mile just to get a soda and a piece of bread for their Christmas party. Claudia was broken heart and decided to go to Agua de Dios to see by herself the situation of those children and the community in general. She was so moved to see so much poverty and vulnerability: children running in unpaved streets without shoes and wearing rags; elders wandering in the street affected by leprosy; homeless living under trees and even in coves. That day Claudia made a decision: " Those children were going to have a dignified and deserving Christmas party that any child should have; they were going to wear shoes, have new clothes, food, balloons, candies and toys, not only this year but the years to come". At that same moment, this Foundation was born. As years have passed, more help is needed, and Fecundation Una Mano Amiga started to develop new projects and activities foreseeing more possibilities to help the target community of children and elders. Years later, after Claudia moved to the United States, Fundacion Una Mano Amiga was officially registered in Florida. "If each of us did something for those in need, the world would be a much better place" . Anonimous CHARITY DESCRIPTION: In year 2012 Fundacion Una Mano Amiga was officially registered in the State of Florida, USA, as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, and in year 2015 a DBA was created under the name Extending a Hand Foundation in order to be able to reach the English speaking community. Extending a Hand Foundation helps and supports children and elders in need in the community of Agua de Dios, an impoverished town in rural Colombia, located 3 hours away from Bogota, the capital city of Colombia. It was first founded as a leprosy colony and even though it is under control, it still suffers the threat and the consequences of leprosy today. For almost 21 years Extending a Hand Foundation has executed a series of projects aimed at improving life conditions and access to education in this region. It has provided support to basic necessities, education, medical assistance and improvements to facilities for living and studying to more than 450 children from local boarding schools and from surrounding villages, as well as to more than a hundred abandoned elders in Agua de Dios, in coordination with and as a cooperation to the work done by Instituto Hijas de los Sagrados Corazones, HH.SS.CC., www.hijasdelossagradoscorazones.org . It is achieved through programs of aid, education and actions of preventive and curative health, as well as through projects for the self sustainability of this vulnerable community. Likewise, by extending their hand, Extending a Hand helps children and young people to improve and strengthen their self esteem and become good citizens , preventing them from falling into the hands of delinquency and many other threats to which they are permanently exposed. Thus, it also teaches them to do the same for others: to extend their hand in the future, with compassion and solidarity, to those who may need it. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Construction of a new Santa Ana Boarding School for girls: SABS Project This became the main project for Extending a Hand. The current school is collapsing and it is imminent that a new school be built to provide a safe living and learning environment for these poor girls who do not have another place to go. The Health Department issued a mandatory evacuation because of the high risk, and therefore the school area of the building has been empty since 2013, but the girls had to remain under high risk until 2018 because they had no other place to live , even though the situation was very dangerous. Our goal is to build a new boarding school where 80 girls can live and 150 boys can study. We started the First Stage of construction that was the most urgent in July, 2018 and December, 2018 and the first 40 girls are living in a safe, beautiful and out of danger home. In July, 2019 we started the construction of the Second Stage, which is the school for 150 children. It is on the 2nd, 3rd and 3rd. Stage where we require support and donation to complete this project. https://www.extendingahand.org/santa-ana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8sdjr9yjOo Our campaigne: https://www.gofundme.com/manage/lets-build-a-school-for-150-children-in-colombia. 2.
