This is how our English class students learn!

Playing card to memorize English vocabulary
Playing card to memorize English vocabulary

In the English classes of our Vocational Training Centre (VTC), the students not only learn from listening to their teachers, doing exercises and memorizing lessons, but they also learn through fun activities, such as watching movies, playing games and interacting with native speakers. All of these engaging activities encourage the students to speak and build their confidence using English.

Some of the games that are played by the students include “Say Act”, “Analyzing Pictures”, “Do It in Pairs” and “Who Am I”. These games are very simple, yet they motivate the students to be creative and confident. There are many benefits from learning languages through games: more vocabulary practice, using proper grammar, grasp using conversational English expressions and so on. And YUM’s teachers have a common saying to their students, “It is okay to pronounce it wrong, it is not a big deal if your grammar is messed up. That is how you learn!”

Below are some of the students’ experiences in the VTC English class:

“Learning English through games is really truly fun. I can remember the words and grammar easily rather than just learning it through writing.  I enjoyed it so much and sometimes I forget that the time for studying is already up. I have been motivated to learn English more and want to continue to the Intermediate class level in the next term.” Wulan,  High School student.

“I love being in the VTC English class. It is always fun and full of energy. I hope that more students out there could experience what I have experienced.  My favorite English game is “Analyzing Picture”. The result of this game is that I feel more confident in doing my English assignment at school. Thank you very much for Mr. Cecep’s dedication in teaching us.” Egi, High School student.

Thank you GlobalGiving donors, with your generous support, YUM can to continue providing qualified English teachers for the disadvantaged youth in Cipanas, West Java through our Vocational Training Centre.

Update: Life almost one year after the disaster

Temporary housing for 2 villages and 45 families
Temporary housing for 2 villages and 45 families

Dear kind supporters,

It has been almost one year since we created this project page to appeal for help to victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu & Donggala (Central Sulawesi). You responded immediately and generously and with your donations (and many others outside of GlobalGiving), we were able to:

  • Provide emergency water, food, health kits, blankets, etc to more than 3,000 families
  • Open public kitchens providing free food for the poor and elderly (500 packages distributed daily)
  • Facilitate trauma healing sessions for women and children
  • Distribute 1,000 water filters and solar lamps
  • Conduct health check ups for children
  • Build 45 temporary housing in 2 villages

Thanks to help from around the world, YUM was able to keep helping the people in Palu & Donggala until today when many other NGOs only focused on the first months after the disaster. This sustained support has been greatly appreciated by the people we met there.

With this report, we would like to thank you once again for your generosity in our time of need, and we would like to let you know that with the finalised construction of all 45 temporary housing, we have accomplished our task of providing the necessary support after the disaster. Today, we have decided to discontinue fundraising for the project. However, we will still monitor the communities that we supported thanks to our collaboration with local NGO ForBes Indonesia.

For our recurring donors who have generously given a monthly donation to this project, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and if you wish to continue helping our community, you may do so by donating to our projects:

Quality Education for Children in West Java

Providing Skills for Indonesian Unemployed Youth

Help Promote Good Reading Habits in Central Kalimantan

And for those interested in knowing more about Yayasan Usaha Mulia, please read our 2018 Annual Report and contact us for further information.

Once again, thank you and God bless you!

A well deserved end-of-school year outing!

In front of Cianjur Square Park
In front of Cianjur Square Park

Once a year before the long school holiday starts, the preschoolers of YUM’s Early Childhood Learning Centre go on a school trip. This year they went to D’Jons Water Park and Cianjur Square Park, which are located an hour’s car ride from the preschool.

D’Jons Water Park is a family favorite recreation site because it not only provides a swimming pool but it also has many fun and enjoyable attractions such as a mini zoo, ATV car rentals, outbound tracks and many other activities.

Under the parents’ and teacher’s supervision, the students enjoyed their swimming and water activities a lot. Afterward, they went together to the mini zoo. They were given a guide that explained about the animals they saw and the students loved it very much. Before, they only knew the animals from books and movies, but now they got to see it all in real life.

After D’Jons, the students went to Cianjur Square Park and had lunch there. At this park they enjoyed performances from a local artist, taking pictures at a photo booth and they played around in this beautiful park. Unfortunately, they were not able to stay there for long because an hour later it began to rain.  Despite the weather, it was such a beautiful and relaxing day for everyone.

Dear GlobalGiving donors, thanks to your donation, this is the type of activity that the children are able to enjoy each year. Without your support, they would not be able to discover new sights and experiences. We are very thankful for your kind support to our project!
