About Glory Health and Nature Organization(GHENO) Glory Health and Nature Organization is a Kisumu based Kenyan development organization whose main objective is to "enhance capacity of the youth on income generation and advocate for their access to sustainable Adolescent and Reproductive Health services. The organization was registered in the year 2013 as a national Non-governmental organization focussing on local enterprise development and Environmental sustainability . The organization is dedicated to improving human living conditions by offering tailor made training, strategic advice and technical assistance as well as implementing social development programmes in resource poor settings. The specific objectives of GHENO include; i. To promote awareness and utilization of reproductive health services through promotion of and advocating for use of contraceptives especially among the youth and adolescents. ii. To promote youth engagement in income generation. We do this through training and mentoring of youth groups on Agri-business and Table banking strategies. Trained groups are supported to either expand their existing income generating enterprises or establish new ones based on the prevailing opportunities. The groups are then linked to local Business Development Services providers to support in accessing both the required inputs as well as sustainable markets for their products iii. To promote environmental conservation practices among the youth through training and sensitizing youth groups on the use of renewable energy technologies especially the solar lighting and energy saving jikos iv. To strengthen the capacity of youth groups to actively participate in local development through training selected youth groups on basic participatory advocacy skills including; selection of advocacy issues, formulation and delivery and advocacy messages and monitoring advocacy processes In response to the escalating rate of youth unemployment in Kenya, GHENO established the County Concrete and Steel ltd in the year 2015 where disadvantaged youth are trained on informal vocational courses including; building and construction, brick making, masonry, plant mechanics . motor vehicle mechanics and general fittings. 2. Vision GHENO's vision is ' a world where all people are economically productive, in good health and live in a clean environment' . The Mission of GHENO is to offer all necessary quality support to the youth and other partners (technical assistance, research and training services) to governments, CiSvil ociety Organizations, private sector and international development partners; that enable young people to effective respond towards emerging socio-economic, health and environmental challenges. 3. GHENO Conceptual Framework From development experience, GHENO believes that the youth and other communities in resource poor settings need to be provided with technical and material assistance to: better understand their community problems, design strategic and cost effective solutions, acquire knowledge and skills to implement solutions to their problems, and also monitor and evaluate the results of their interventions. 4. Collaboration with local and international Partners In executing its programs, GHENO recognizes the importance of collaboration with local and international partners. The aim of such collaboration is to build local capacity as well as leverage on the existing resource gaps both technical and financial. Such partnerships also help in experience sharing and discovery of new opportunities that can be exploited together for mutual benefits. Organization structure 6. Previous/Current Programs Since the year 2013, GHENO has been involved in numerous activities that aim at empowering young people to gain economic independence, respect and dignity within their communities. The following are some of the projects that GHENO has implemented in partnership with other development agencies; i. Health services and advocacy GHENO works with Kenyan communities through the county governments' department of health to promote positive behavior and improved health seeking practices. These covers Reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and malaria. Adolescent and Sexual Reproductive Health In partnership with County Departments of Health and Pathfinder International, GHENO has been implementing a reproductive health program targeting girls between 14 and 24 years of age in Kisumu, Siaya, Migori and Homabay counties through sensitization, Behavior change communication and advocacy. A total of 12,000 girls have been reached in the last 3 years. The organizations works with Community health volunteers (CHVs) and private health facilities in social franchises to offers Post Abortion Care (PAC) counselling and referral. PAC services goes beyond adolescents to target larger general population of Women of reproductive health. Our clinical team of health care providers comprising clinical officers and Nurses provide technical assistance and training, coaching and mentorship to health providers in the private sectors. In Migori and Kisumu, we currently collaborate with and support 5 health facilities. Reproductive health services also include marketing family planning commodities and community outreach services to increase Contraception prevalence rate (CPR). We have also adopted an integration of services model to provide wholesome services that cover Family planning, cervical cancer screening and treatment for positive lesions HIV/AIDS These services are run in partnership with Population Services Kenya and the Ministry of health. The focus is on prevention, access to services and capacity improvement. GHENO is accredited by NASCOP to train HTS Counsellors. The organization organizes two weeks course to diploma holders with health related prior training or community development. We also do Social Behavior Change interventions, communication and advocacy within the counties. We promote correct and consistent condom use through social marketing of condoms and distribution of free GoK condoms. Malaria GHENO works in partnership with other NGOs within Migori and Kisumu counties to promote net use and promotion of mosquito repellant soaps and indoor residual spray (IRS). Our focus is to enhance good practices as outlined in the Kenya malaria strategy. We work through community units to champion net hanging skills, community case management and social marketing of nets and repellant soaps. ii. Environmental conservation In partnership with Population Services Kenya (PSK), Kisumu, Global Alliance of Clean Cooking and Micro Energy Credits, Nairobi, GHENO has been promoting environmental conservation through enhancing the capacity of youth groups in Kisumu and Migori Counties on use of clean cook stoves that conserve energy. The selected youth groups are trained on climate change and income generation through natural resource management. Committed youths are then supported with initial capital and linked to dealers of clean stoves from where they order and sell the stoves to prospective clients. iii. Youth Empowerment Through County Concrete and Steel ltd, GHENO selects, admits and trains disadvantaged youth on job specific skills including; building and construction, brick making, masonry, plant mechanics, motor vehicle mechanics and general fittings. A total of 55 youth (15 female and 40 males) have so far benefitted from this project with 9 of them successfully linked to informal employers. GHENO is currently in discussions with the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) Kisumu office on how the trainees can be supported to obtain the relevant certification.
