In 2014, a small group of Oderai community women came together to discuss the many women's challenges cropping up around the community- catalyzed by the handful of others around the world to provided a space for Women, volunteers, and leaders to work together to support gender equity and were rooted in the belief that we can create more changes together than alone. Around kitchen tables and on living room couches, these women shared food and wisdom and knew that Africa, too, needed a place to advance economic opportunities and philanthropy by and for women. Their work is rooted in addressing a serious and significant issue: the disproportionate number of women living in poverty. With dedicated members HOW-Africa was formed. From the beginning, our leaders came together from different backgrounds in service of a shared vision: to support economic security of women across our Teso communities by opening doors to opportunity. Over the two years leading to the launch, individuals made generous gifts and pledges including support from local political women representatives HOW-Africa is a growing organization that combines resources from different sources in support of a shared focus on supporting women and girls in Africa and particularly in Soroti- Teso sub-region. Our leaders creates strategic and a use funds to address pressing present-day challenges, and setting aside others for future needs that would emerge. We invest in innovative community-led solutions to ensure equal opportunity to economic security for girls, women, and families across Minnesota. We are feminists for racial, economic, and gender justice. We are dedicated to achieving gender, racial, and economic justice by centering the experience and expertise of communities most impacted by systemic injustice. Our work is guided by three core strategic pillars: invest, train, and connect. "When other parts of the country are fending off unyielding attacks on basic rights, we in HOW-AFRICA are advancing significant change and keeping pace with the march of progress." The Community empowerment initiative works in coalitions to create systemic change around important gender justice issues: pay equity, affordable childcare, ending gender-based violence, workplace protections, fair and just housing, ending exclusionary school disciplinary policies, criminal justice reform, reproductive health and justice, and environmental health and justice. Our Mission Catalyzing community to advance and accelerate economic opportunities for Teso women and their families. Our Vision Our vision is that all Vulnerable girls and women in Teso have equal access to quality education, Good health and freedom of choice and that young scholars will be empowered to finish school, leverage their educations into viable opportunities for earned income, and have the tools they need to self-advocate for their own life choices. Community Connect We power prosperity together by harnessing the insights, ideas, and investments of our diverse community. Philanthropy Giving We fuel prosperity by connecting donors to the promise of opportunity for African women and their families. Did You Know? Community helps guide our way forward. We believe that deliberately connecting with diverse communities to include multiple perspectives in our work leads to better results. We work with many partners comprised of dedicated volunteers to host educational events so that women throughout Teso sub-region can connect learn to advocate, and drive change in their communities to power prosperity. Did you know? Funding for women and girls by foundations is less than 7.5%. That's not enough. We know we can't do this alone. With your gift today, together we will protect women's progress and advance opportunities for Africa n women and their families. Your generosity fuels HOW- Africa work to create more pathways to economic security - until every woman thrives and Africa rises. Thank you for investing in Africa n women and their families! Impact We advance women's prosperity with our community, philanthropy, and our WAGES program. High-quality research shines the way forward for HOW-Africa highlighting underlying causes of gender inequity and informing our grant making and advocacy work. WAGES (Women Achieving Greater Economic Security) is our programmatic body of work that employs research, public policy advocacy, and strategic grant making to help women reach economic security. Five key resources that women need to achieve economic security: livable Wages, Equal pay, Employment opportunities, Child care, and Quality Education. Of those priority resources, HOW-Africa determined that a livable wage is the critical catalyst and springboard to economic advancement. The aim of WAGES is to impact Africa's prosperity by propelling more girls into careers that enable them to meet the current and future needs of their families. We do this by learning and working with our partners to elevate practices that work and dismantle systems that continue to hold women back. Our approach We are Rooted in Community Insights We Listened. We Learned. We Focused. Africa currently one of the African country that lacks most prolific economies, with far too many women still encountering systemic barriers to earning a livable wage. In fact, Millions of women in rural and slams in Africa live in poverty and hundreds of thousands more live on the economic edge, where an unexpected car repair or medical bill can trigger a financial meltdown from which they and their families cannot recover. In HOW-Africa - we call upon our strategic planning partner and you are encourage to Join our Vision and Action, strategic plans and asking our stakeholders and ourselves, "how can we create better economic opportunities for Africa women to progress toward prosperity?" We surveyed and listened to nearly 1,300 community members, especially women and girls who reported they cannot meet their families' basic needs. Community input helped us emerge with the clarity of a single vision for our work, a refocused mission, strengthened core values, and the insights needed to maximize our impact.
