The GOD'S CHILD Project

The GOD'S CHILD Project's mission is "to break the bitter chains of poverty through education, housing and healthcare." While GOD'S CHILD is rooted in education and health-care, we aim to support the communities we serve at every level of development. Through our wide range of programs, we help children and families living in extreme poverty to meet their basic needs and find a restored sense of hope, self-worth and human dignity. Religious affiliation is not a requirement for any program services.

A Brighter Future for Estefany

Estafany comes from a very low income family. Since she was little she has worked with her parents selling food at fairs around the country and was forced to always be on the move since the fairs never stay in one place for very long. Because of this she was unable to attend school with children her age. She and her family soon realized that she would need to get an education in order to have a brighter future. They looked for help from many institutions but were unable to receive assistance due to her age and her family’s lack of resources. In January of 2015 they came to the Scheel Center, part of the God’s Child Project, and she and two of her siblings were accepted into the program. She is now 15 years old and is in the first grade in the Scheel Center.

Currently Estefany receives all of the benefits that the God’s Child Project gives to its students: clothes, shoes, food and medical and dental care. The legal department is also giving support to the family since one time when Estefany was helping her parents sell food someone attempted to rape her. This person works selling food nearby and her father realized what was going on and came to the defense of his daughter and reported the incident to the police. The Project is giving them all the support necessary, especially psychological care for Estefany since the incident affected her emotionally.

Despite all of the problems that she has dealt with, Estefany is determined to finish her studies and is very happy with how her teachers and classmates treat her and is thankful for the support of her family. Her parents are also grateful for the God’s Child Project and the opportunity that it has given their children to grow and have a brighter future.

Help a Young Single Mother Feed Her Son

This infant is originally from a town called Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa in the department of Escuintla, Guatemala. His mother is 19 years old and dropped out of school after 8th grade because her father no longer wanted to help her pay for her education. She left home because she decided to start a family with a young man from Colombia. The relationship was going really well until the father of the infant started hitting the mother every day. She got tired of being beaten every day so she took her baby and left her husband.

The mother did not eat well while she was pregnant with this little baby and was beaten by her husband which caused him to be born prematurely with anemia and delayed development. She did not have support of her father because he did not want her back in the house and her mother passed away from uterine cancer. After a year they detected that the mother suffered from mild malnutrition and the baby suffered from severe malnutrition so the mother took her baby to the health center in Escuintla where she was referred to Casa Jackson Nutritional Center.

Currently this infant is progressing in his treatment. His weight has improved a great deal and he now has his level of malnourishment is now moderate. Every day his health is improving and so is his mother’s because she also receives food every day.

His mother is thankful for the support of Casa Jackson Nutritional Center and everyone that donates to the project to help support families and children in need.

A Better Future

This girl is 9 years old and is in 3rd grade at the Dreamer´s Center School of the God´s Child Project. In January of 2015 the family came to the God´s Child Project looking for educational support for their daughter due to various problems in the family (economical, illnesses and the family´s living conditions etc.). The girl was accepted at the Dreamer´s Center along with 3 sisters of varying ages.

She is a very special case because she has already suffered a lot at her young age. Her mother is her only support and she will need more attention than the other children since she has attempted to commit suicide. The girl, her 3 siblings and mother have suffered since her father was kidnapped and killed 6 years ago.

The Project is supporting the girl´s family in several ways because we want to help her to heal from all that she has suffered and help her to have a childhood without worries and adult problems. As a special case they will receive medical and psychological care and legal counsel. They will also receive donated vegetables every Friday. The Dreamer´s Center will provide breakfast and lunch for the girl as well as school supplies and shoes.

Despite the problems that the girl has faced she is happy here at the Dreamer´s Center and travels from Chimaltenango every day with her sisters to go to school and get a good education.
