Mental ill-health and poverty are bound together in a negative cycle - mental illness disrupts people's ability to learn and work, and poverty in turn increases the risk of developing mental disorders. Mental illness is estimated to constitute 14% of the global burden of disease, with approximately 80% of people with mental illness living in low- and middle-income countries, such as those where we have programmes.
