Books in Bloom

Thank you for your continued support of Raising A Reader! Did you know we are more than halfway to reaching our fundraising goal for this project? With just $27,160 left to raise, we are edging closer to bringing books and programming to 700 budding scholars this Spring!

With Raising A Reader, imaginations will blossom with each new story. Your gift of $100 will provide a child and their family with engaging programming and books for one year. Your gift today will make a difference in the life of a child tomorrow.

When books are lacking in the home, children are left behind in school. An alarming 6 out of 10 U.S. children fail to read proficiently by grade 4. When parents are engaged and share books, children succeed.

Principal Laura Vines from Kalihi Kai Elementary in Honolulu, Hawaii has been tracking the success of students participating in Raising A Reader. She says, “Our first cohort in the Raising A Reader program is in their 3rd grade year and they are showing the highest proficiency in reading than any other grade in a tested grade!”

Our budding scholars are counting on you. When you give today, one less child is left behind. Please share this project with your friends and family!

STEM Programming Arrives in Maryland Classrooms

Raising A Reader (RAR) currently serves more than 10,000 children and families ages 3-6 years in the state of Maryland with its core book bag rotation program. Thanks to your generosity, we will be delivering the STEM program to even more children in low-income schools across the state.

Select pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms will receive STEM books and curriculum 2018 -19 school year. Raising A Reader with STEM includes 20 books featuring science, technology, engineering, and math themes. Each book contains a bookplate on the inside cover with an explanation of the STEM topic featured in the book and question prompts and book sharing tips for parents and caregivers to share with their reader to better understand STEM concepts.

By introducing STEM concepts – science, technology, engineering and math – at this early stage in a child’s development we can positively influence their interest in fields not frequently pursued in their communities. We will also introduce families – parents, caregivers and even siblings, cousins and extended family – to the importance of sharing in their child’s learning through reading together.

Raising A Reader has reached more than 1.6 million children in 34 states. With your support, we can reach our goal of impacting twice as many children in all fifty states by 2020!

You truly are changing the lives of children and families we serve across the US.
