Form 1 intake and future plans

This month, a Kenyan Daily carried an editorial detailing why a majority of children graduating from primary schools fail to attend Kenya’s national and provincial high schools. Some of the reasons provided include lack of school fees and distance from the children’s homes to school. For the children sheltered at the Good Samaritan Children Home, Nairobi, the reasons could go beyond these. Because of their plight, these children are likely to miss high school due to lack of tuition fee, school uniform, textbooks, writing materials, and school shoes. However, due to the generosity of our donors who have continued to contribute funds that have helped them acquire these requirements, the majority of kids who graduated from primary schools have been able to join high schools that recruited them this year. This means, their dreams of acquiring quality education and realizing their career goals are within reach. We cannot thank you enough!

We look forward to continue raising funds for these children who remain optimistic about their future despite their painful past experiences. This summer, friends of Fabulous African Fabrics (FAF) Organization in Lansing, East Lansing, and Grand Rapids, Michigan will hold a rummage sale to raise funds for this worthy cause. We hope you can join us in this event once the details have been worked out and communicated.

2012 Record Breaking Year

At the Good Samaritan Children
At the Good Samaritan Children's Home

Fabulous Afrcian Fabrics broke its last record by $500, by sending $10,500 to the Good Samaritan Children's Home in 2012.  It is amounts like that which has allowed the Home to hire a social worker and other professionals making this home one of the best run in Nairobi.

FAF raised six thousand dollars on Global Giving last year.  You have made this possible.  Thank you so much for your generosity.  In December FAF sent $1694 dollars for Project 7377, shoes for school children, and $652 for tuition, Project 6163.

The Anthony Salazar Fund, raised $1200 this winter.  This money is used for emergencies as they arise at the orphanage.  Last year the emergency fund was used for the special items the growing number of babies and toddlers require.  Our sales of items made of African textiles also provides money for the Home.  In 2012 our hatter, Lucille Ramshaw sewed 24 hats that we sold at the Grand Rapids, Michigan Artisan's Market.  The coming summer will be our 14th year with a booth at the market.

Keep in mind that Bonus Day on Global Giving falls in March, and you will be hearing from us and the need for tuition money for those bright teens at the Good Samaritan Home.  For more news about life in Africa and this organization check our website:  www.fabulousafricanfabrics.org
