Dear Green Rhinos Supporter,

Our team is growing larger and stronger!

There are 3500 Green Rhinos presently in India spread over the Delhi, Gurgaon, Hisar, Kolkata, Siliguri, Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, West Bengal and Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, Odisha. Visit our blog www.medium.com/green-rhinos to know more.

The Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve and Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary are extremely ecologically sensitive areas that the Green Rhinos are working passionately to protect.

Some of the projects the Green Rhinos are presently conducting in Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary are:

  • To spread awareness about the use of organic fertilizers in different villages.
  • To make 10 villages polythene free.
  • Plantation of 1000 mangrove trees in coastal river banks.

The Green Rhinos in the urban area of Hisar in Haryana have conducted projects on garbage management and composting, spreading awareness about the beneficial use of solar energy and  are creating a botanic garden in their school. As a result of a Green Rhinos project garbage bins were installed in 50 school buses!

Thank you for your continued support to create youth nature leaders! You are part of our team!

 In gratitude,

Diti

Green Rhinos and urban conservation projects

Maheshtala Girls School Green Rhinos
Maheshtala Girls School Green Rhinos

Dear Kind Supporter,

We have just completed one phase of the Green Rhinos Program in Kolkata, India, and are very happy to share the results with all of you!

One of the most compelling success stories in this phase was that of Maheshtala Girls School – a government school where most students are from families below the poverty line. These young leaders took it upon themselves to simultaneously beautify their school and conserve biodiversity by creating a butterfly park around their school field. They studied local species in Kolkata, met with butterfly experts and became very skilled at identifying and attracting butterflies to their garden. Since then, they have maintained a log of species and their frequency. Not only has the project been a resounding success, the girls themselves have received a huge boost in their self-confidence and leadership skills.

Another success story is that of Gonipur High School. These students organized themselves into teams to document local biodiversity in their areas. They managed to make lists of trees, birds and insects that they encountered near their school, and are working to put these on a map so that they can find the most diverse and valuable green spaces around them.

Other successful projects include introducing waste management systems, creating plastic-free zones and engaging local people to stop dumping waste in a creek. Overall, we are very pleased with the creativity and hard work of the city’s youth, and excited to work in six different locations across the country!

Thank you,

Diti

Green Rhinos are 2400 strong!

Dear Kind Supporter,

The team of 2400 Green Rhinos is going strong! They are in the National Capital Region (NCR), Kolkata, Siliguri and Sundarbans.

Green Rhinos in the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve, have created tree plantation projects, raised over 2000 saplings and have planted over 20,000 trees. They are in the process of maintaining these saplings to prevent soil erosion and create habitats for wildlife.

The only girls’ school in Kultali Community Development Block, Debipur Karunamoyee Balika Bidyayatan in the Sundarbans started with a garbage cleaning drive in 2012 after which garbage pits were installed in their school. Since then they are also doing composting of food waste.

Green Rhinos of Sri Sri Academy School in Kolkata, conducted a campaign to curb sound pollution outside their school. In their opinion the honking of car horns has reduced as a result of their campaign.

Currently Green Rhinos in Kolkata schools have begun to study and record local wildlife, including populations of butterflies, migratory birds and trees. They are planning to clean up a local water body and have begun setting up sustainable waste management solutions in their schools.

In Siliguri, Green Rhinos are working to make their schools water and energy efficient and are setting up waste management systems within the school premises.

The Green Rhinos Program aims not only to secure a green future for the world, it also aims to create a generation of environmentally conscious leaders. If these young people are an indication of the future, it looks bright.

Please consider helping us reach more schools with this program!

Thank you for the support!
