Food rescue is at the core of our programs and operations and it is part of our strategic planning to maximize the food available in our county. Feeding San Diego works with more than 770 food donor locations and 121 farms and packing sheds to execute our unique, resourceful model of operation focuses on preventing high-quality food that already exists from going to waste, and instead, connecting it to people in need. This food is always well received, and makes it possible for Feeding San Diego to reach significantly more community members than we would through traditional food banking. Last year, our decentralized food rescue model diverted 31 million pounds of food from going to waste, accounting for 76% of the food we distributed. This helped decrease the environmental impact of expanding landfills and decomposing organic waste, reducing greenhouse emission levels equivalent to removing 6,140 cars from the road for one year.
