The Julio Otoni Community Center is open again!

In the computer lab!
In the computer lab!

We are very excited to announce that with the succesful roll-out of the COVID vaccine, the Julio Otoni Community Center has opened its doors to carry out our usual activitites in the community!

To avoid aglomerations, we have divided them into groups and receive 15 children in the morning and another 25 in the afternoon at different times. We have restarted our computer science classes, afterschool tutoring program, and capoeira workshop as well.

As international measures loosen up as well, we are excited to reopen our international volunteering program so we can continue our English language classes with the kids as well!

We will be sharing photos and stories about our progress with you - we are so grateful to all our donors who have helped us continue our work after this difficult year, and most specially, to step up as a Community Center bringing basic health and food security services as the pandemic hit the favelas the hardest.

The children are back at SINAL!

The Rocinha Creative English class
The Rocinha Creative English class

This month we had the opportunity to host for the first time in over a year a learning journey with children from impoverished communities in our campus!

Because of the pandemic, we hadn't been bringing people to SINAL. However, with the advances of the vaccination we were able to host the children from The Rocinha Creative English Programme to come and participate in many activities. The goal was to transmit a sense of care for the environment and show them the importance of sustainability.

This group was particularly curious and full of energy, so it was great to kickstart our learning journeys again!

While on the journey, they had the chance to practice their English with SINAL’s team, which consists of people from different countries. Among the activities we  put together, we learned about the different types of soil and how to improve them for planting and reforestation, and how to treat different animals, by putting ourselves in their place.

We are so grateful to our donors for supporting us even through this unusual year. We are looking forward to creating more of these opportunities for children of marginalized communities with your help!

Meet Pretinho!

Pretinho and his friends talking a walk!
Pretinho and his friends talking a walk!

Pretinho - or blackie, in Portuguese - is one of 5 dogs that were abandoned recently at SINAL. He has a very sweet disposition but is a bit scared of people sometimes, which makes us think he had a troubled past.

Since he arrived, he has been fixed (see cute photo attached!) vaccinated and wewormed. He has integrated into our multi-species community! as he has warmed up to people he has truly shown how loyal he is, always wanting to be around the SINAL team. He is also probably the biggest eater around here... so we have to watch out for leaving food laying around!

One of his favorite things to do in the afternoon is acompanying one of our team members for a jog around the property. He really does not like bath time at all, but is getting used to it too!

A big thank you to our donors who help us give a dignified home to all our furry friends who have been abandoned and mistreated, it truly transforms their personalities. Pretinho is the biggest example of that!
