New volunteer class 2017

New volunteer class 2017

Hello VE friends!

We are very happy and excited because on January 2, 11 new volunteers joined our team here at VE Global! The team now have representatives from USA, UEA, UK, China, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and Chile. We are growing!

Volunteers and interns have since their arrival participated in two weeks of dynamic training. The training provided necessary tools to become positive role models for the children that they are going to work with, as well as getting accustomed in their new home, Santiago.

The training consisted of conversations, lectures and many participatory activities to understand how VE Global operates regarding areas such as; fundraising, relationship with the government and private sector. The training also included sessions about Chilean culture, food and language. In addition to the more educative sessions, some games were included, to maintain a good atmosphere and to create unity in the group.

On Monday January 8, volunteers had the opportunity to meet the five organizations that they will work with. They are excited to start working with children!

The final day of the training, Thursday January 12, culminated in a conversation about the commitment to VE and in the evening, a small gathering to relax and enjoy the efforts made during the weeks together.

In short, the two weeks gave a great opportunity for the volunteers to get to know each other, VE Global and the city of Santiago.

We have to stress the immense work done during the trainings by the previous volunteers, los antiguos, - the lunches were delicious! Thank you!

Love from Santiago!

Life skills program has been a success!

Youth participating in Life Skills program
Youth participating in Life Skills program

As we finish off the first cycle of Life Skills program !Soy Independiente!, it is a perfect time to both reflect on the success of the last three months and look forward to an exciting future.

Since implementing the Life Skills workshops six months ago, we have had meetings with 14 partner organizations to share thoughts and opinions on the program’s progress. In general, our partners see the program as very beneficial for supporting Santiago youth at social risk in their transition to independent living. We have already seen positive changes in the outlooks and day-to-day interactions of the workshop participants. We also received praise for the project as a whole for being well-organized and structured.

“I want to thank this project because I feel that the young participants learn to envision their life beyond the day-to-day life of the children’s home.” (Social Worker, Partner Organization)

While the Life Skills program is designed to be replicated in schools, community centers and other social intervention organizations, there is room for further growth and development. To help develop the program, click here or sign up to give a monthly donation.

In September, our new class of seven volunteers arrived in Santiago from all corners of the world. We welcomed them with two weeks of orientation filled with fun activities and workshops. Our volunteers received professional training on how to build lesson plans as well as an introduction to Chilean culture, history, health, safety and more.

“Coming to South America to volunteer was something that I’d wanted to do for a long time...When I found out about VE I was sold! I loved the transparency and support from the community.” (Francesca, September 2016 Volunteer)

“I’m on my gap year before medical school and wanted to volunteer in Chile. I hope to gain understanding of people from various backgrounds and develop friendships with the children. I think this experience will be very useful for me in my future work.” (QeeQee, September 2016 Volunteer)

“From the very first day, I was impressed with VE Global’s two-week orientation process. Their commitment to developing their newest team members through transparency, honesty, availability and open conversation made me feel immediately comfortable.” (Bella, September 2016 Development and Communications Intern)

Much like our Life Skills program, we continue to develop our volunteer orientation with sensitivity to feedback from the participants and community members. We look forward to welcoming our next class of volunteers and interns next year!

Expanding networks, developing skills, transforming lives

Jornada in Hijuelas
Jornada in Hijuelas

Hello VE Friends and Family,

24h Campaign!

On July 12th-13th we had our annual 24h campaign. This year, thus far, has been one of great changes, the biggest of which being undoubtedly the arrival of Mercedes Henderson as our new Executive Director, marking the beginning of a new era. Here at VE, we see change as an opportunity; an opportunity to do better, to reach further and to have an enduring impact on the lives of the children we care for. With more than 13.000 dollars raised - and even more in matching donations - you have validated our project. You allow us to continue working with youth at social risk in Santiago and develop our organization for another year. Thank you for your support!

Programs News

In other news, our life skills program ¡Soy Independiente! is now fully underway. Three groups of 42 eager young adults meet twice a week to participate in life skills workshops and discuss their future independent adult lives. So far, the program has been a wonderful experience for both monitors and youth. Each participant brings a positive and determined attitude to the table, proving to us once more that this program serves the purpose we envisioned. Thank you for allowing us to continue our work!

Volunteers in Training

Our May starters are now more than halfway through their volunteer experience and as such, our traditional Jornada took place. The whole staff, interns and volunteers of VE, with a special appearance from Pablo Jorquera, member of our Chilean board of directors, spent the weekend of July 1st outside Santiago in Hijuelas. Fun team-building exercises and dedicated time for self-reflection helped us get to know each other more and allowed us to reflect on how our personal and professional goals have evolved throughout the past two months.

Un abrazo from Santiago!
