GLOBALGIVING MANGROVE REFORESTATION PROJECT

The Global Giving Mangrove Reforestation Project is a two-year initiative which aims for the rehabilitation of Northern Cebu’s mangrove habitat which sustained considerable loss from Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) last November 2013.

The first component of the project involves the planting of 362,500 seedlings of species Rhizophora stylosa and Avicennia marina along the coast of barangays Agujo, Tominjao and Tapilon in the Municipality of Daanbantayan and in Brgy. Kaongkod in the Municipality of Madridejos. Partner LGUs thru their Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) have identified the reforestation sites and the local communities were tapped for the supply of seedlings and workforce during the mangrove planting activities. At least 72 fisherfolks were directly benefited by this project, wherein beneficiaries earned additional income from supplying mangrove seedlings and maintenance of the reforested sites.

The second component is the maintenance of the reforestation area by the partner fisherfolks. This component entails replanting to replace the planted mangroves that did not thrive. They also perform year-round maintenance, which includes removal of tangled weeds and trash from growing mangrove plants, checking for plant disease, and quarterly inventory by an external surveyor to determine the survival rate and determine how many will be replanted.

UPDATES

Thank you to your generous donation to this project.  Based on the inventory conducted last May 2015, about 300,000 living mangroves have been accounted in the reforestation sites. The entire mangrove population is in excellent condition. No gross signs of diseases or other physical maladies that affect their growth have been observed. The high survival rate can be attributed to good location, committed communities and supportive project partners.

PROJECT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

As of end of October, we have already established 36.25 hectares mangrove reforestation sites in the municipalities of Madridejos and Daanbantayan, a mangrove nursery in Daanbantayan.  Overall, we have achieved 80% survival rate.  And on top of that  have organized fisherfolks to become stewards of the mangrove reforestation sites.

ACTIVITIES TO BE ACCOMPLISHED  until December 2016

PBSP will continue its project monitoring, conduct a final inventory and eventually turn it over to the Local Government Unit (LGU).  We are hopeful that you will continue to support this project.

The devastation left by Typhoon Haiyan forced the Philippines to consider what could have mitigated the storm surges and extreme weather conditions that are now expected to be the norm as a result of global climate change. Both environmentalists and scientists agree that mangroves can serve as “buffer” and shield human settlements from the maximum strength of storms. Still in line with the original objective of helping the fishermen and farmerfolks, PBSP’s Mangrove Rehabilitation Program in Bantayan plans to reforest at least 90 hectares of the island’s coastal areas.

Thank you for supporting our Mangrove Reforestation project in Bantayan island in Northern Cebu. Through your generosity, we were able to help communities reforest critical areas along the cost of Bantayan island which was badly-hit by Typhoon Haiyan.

Madridejos

Last May 3 and 17, 2015, PBSP facilitated the mangrove planting activity in Brgy. Kaongkod and Malbago in the municipality of Madridejos. A total of 100,000 propagules of the species Rhizophora (90%) and seedling of Avicenmia (10%) were planted.

Based on the 1st inventory and sampling conducted last May 7, 2015, one hundred thousand (100,000) living mangroves have been estimated in the project site. Entire mangrove population is in excellent condition. No gross signs of diseases or other physical maladies that affect their growth have been observed. The high survival rate can be attributed to good location and the dedication of partner community in maintaining the site.

Daanbantayan

Last May 3 and 17, 2015 PBSP facilitated the mangrove planting activity in Brgy. Agojo, Tapilon and Tuminjao in the municipality of Daanbantayan. A total of 250,000 propagules of the species Rhizophora (90%) and seedling of Avicenmia(10%) were planted.

Based on the 1st inventory and sampling conducted last May 6, 20135, two hundred thousand (200,000) living mangroves have been estimated in the project site. Entire mangrove population is in excellent condition. No gross signs of diseases or other physical maladies that affect their growth have been observed. The high survival rate can be attributed to good location and the dedication of partner community in maintaining the site.

Gratitude from the community

We consider this project almost complete pending the establishment of a nursery that will continue to supply mangrove seedlings to the communities.

On behalf of the communities in Bantayan island and the municipality of Daanbantayan, we’d like to thank you for the support and we hope you’ll continue to support PBSP programs.

Global Giving Mangrove Reforestation Update

PBSP together with our partners on the ground (since our last update) have already planted 100,000 propagules in ten (10 hectares) in 3 barangays in the municipality of Daanbantayan in the province of Cebu last March 3, 2015 for this project. We also had a meeting with the local office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the preparation of the planting for the remaining 15 hectares (150,000 propagules) in four (4) different barangays in Daanbantayan this coming March 17, 2015 to complete the target.

During the visit from Global Giving representatives last October 2014, we were also able to plant 10 hectares in Barangay Kaongkod and Malbago in the municipality of Madridejos in the province of Cebu.

This project engaged various stakeholders and aims to formulate future environmental management policies for the protection and preservation of the island’s ecosystem, achieve improved protection against natural disasters, ensure greater food security, and increased household incomes for local communities. It is expected to impact 2,600 households locally.
