A Successful Summer Program

Enjoying the Colorado Rockies Baseball Game
Enjoying the Colorado Rockies Baseball Game

The Summer Village Youth Club provided a 3 week program in July and started with three days of field trips.  One to kayak with the Aurora Outdoor Recreation Program, then to the Museum of Nature and Science, then one to a Colorado Rockies Baseball Game.

The second two weeks of the Summer Village Youth Club the JEKL Foundation provided STEAM classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.   This was a Project Based STEAM Camp for 15 students. GENIUS WORKSHOPS gave students a culturally responsive and interactive experience in STEM including Art+design (STEAM) that excited them about their futures in STEAM. SCALABLE GAME DESIGN (SGD) provided students an opportunity to develop computational thinking skills as they designed and created video games and simulations that were stored on an international arcade!

The youth loved this experience!

Finishing Out the School Year!!!

Village Youth Club Obstacle Course
Village Youth Club Obstacle Course

The Village Youth Club has finished out the school year with a bang! We have expanded the program to 50 junior high kids and there seems to be continued interest in participation from kids from all over the region.

This semester the youth were involved with group sports like soccer and dodgeball. In order to ensure graduation from their respective grades we continued to priotitize tutoring to finish out the school year strong.  Our youth enjoyed working with our team to curate and prepare for the Summer Village Youth Club Program.

The last day of Village Youth Club for the school year included an obstacle course and lots of delicious snacks and foods to enjoy.

The Summer Village Youth Club will run for 3 weeks in July and will start will three days of field trips.  One to kayak with the Aurora Outdoor Recreation Program, then to the Museum of Nature and Science, then to a Rockies Game.

The second two weeks we will have JEKL Foundation STEAM classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.   Project Based STEAM Camp for up to 15 students. GENIUS WORKSHOPS will give students a culturally responsive and interactive experience in STEM including Art+design (STEAM) that will excite them about their futures in STEAM. SCALABLE GAME DESIGN (SGD) will provide students an opportunity to develop computational thinking skills as they design and create video games and simulations that are stored on an international arcade!

We are so excited to offer our Village Youth Club this experience!

Spring 2019: #IBELONG

I Belong
I Belong

The “International Kids Club” continues to be a florish as an anchor for our children in our community. As we continue to focus on meeting the academic and wellness needs of middle school students from international backgrounds, several new developments and changes to the program are underway.

In honor of the empowerment and our community feeling a sense of belonging we commissioned and unveiled a 42 foot mural in our Sanctuary space created by Thomas Evans. We highlighted our first International Kids Club member who remains one of our loyal members.

Our MSW interns through the Denver University Graduate School of Social Work, are continuing to develop and implement a social-emotional learning curriculum. Our volunteer base continues to grow with the goal of expanding our tutoring program to ensure every young person in our program has the individual attention and academic support they need to succeed in school. Still looking for more tutors!

Our 15-seater van was stolen over the summer, and we have a replacement! This allows us to be able to shuttle more kids from school to the center and then home after dark. It also opens up more opportunities for field trips to the recreation center for swim days, the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Zoo and other fun learning opportunities in Denver and the surrounding region! We also just just secured a second van as a donation by Amina Auto Repair, for the same purpose.

We continue to grow our program and have many exciting programs to role out this semester! Stay tuned for our next report.
