Back at Last!

Happy to be back
Happy to be back

All educational institutions in Bihar were closed in mid-March due to Covid-19. We were hopeful at different times in May, June, July, August & September that Elsa Primary School would reopen. Finally, the school was given permission to operate again on 15th October!

Our students are very happy to be back after missing so much school time. Covid-19 cases have reduced significantly in Bodhgaya, but as anywhere, there is always the possibility of new outbreaks. Protocols such as cleaning of surfaces, social distancing, mask wearing & regular hand washing are maintained at Elsa Primary School to ensure the safety of students & staff. Government officials may randomly visit the school to check that these measures are being followed correctly.

This week, students received their new uniforms and sweaters - just in time for the start of winter.

Eager to Learn

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, all schools and colleges in Bihar were closed on 15th March. Initially, there was a nation wide lockdown for six weeks. After that, there was a series of rolling lockdowns with restrictions easing to some extent in June. However, in July after  further Covid-19 cases  in Bihar, lockdown was re-imposed in the state from 16th to 31st July.

In the meantime, our students have been missing their beloved school. To facilitate ongoing learning at home, study materials and text books for the new academic year (beginning 1st April) were distributed to the students. One of our teachers resides in the same village as the students, so she has been able to give truncated lessons & assign homework to them. The included photos are of students visiting the school in 'civvies' to collect their new text books.

We are hopeful that Elsa Primary School will re-open on 15th August.

Celebrating Ten Years!

Elsa Primary School just celebrated its ten year anniversary!

The school was opened in 2010 in Harijan Colony, Bodhgaya and since then has expanded in various ways, for example, numbers of students and teachers have increased. For some time, students of various grades were taught in one large class room. However, at the beginning of 2019, the school was invited by parents to move to the village of Karmoni where they provided a larger building with three class rooms, a general area, office, kitchen & toilet. Also, in 2019, the students received school uniforms for the first time. The school provides daily nutrition comprising bread, eggs & milk. This supplements the students' home diet and is much appreciated.

It is a joy to visit Elsa Primary School. The students are so happy - they love learning and they have deep respect their teachers. May the school thrive for many years to come!
