History is Still Being Made, Thanks to You

Nonprofit and Business Leaders Unite
Nonprofit and Business Leaders Unite

Looking back on 2017, we are blown away by the support we have received. Even more so, we are shocked and humbled by the impact that our programs have made in Ecuador, all thanks to YOUR commitment.

Since the "Make Nonprofit History in Ecuador" campaign was launched in March 2017, Hearts of Gold has been able to...

  • Provide 540 hours of private mentoring hours and program support for our three CAP members: Fundación El Arenal, NOVA, and CETAP-Lucy
  • Train 20 nonprofits with unique educational opportunities, impacting over 1,000 beneficiaries that they serve
  • Offered 21 workshops with 84 hours of interactive, specialized education for nonprofit leaders
  • Get invovled with causes ranging from Children and Families to Education, Nutrition, Cancer, Dogs, Autism, Cystic Fibrosis, Special Needs, Health, and Women's Rights
  • Build the first network for nonprofits in Ecuador, bringing together 42 community leaders that for the first time ever, have somewhere to turn for personal and professional support

Aside from the numbers, Hearts of Gold has been able to leverage opportunities for collaboration, for the first time ever working with the Chamber of Commerce of Cuenca and, with much excitement, we have signed a 5-year contract with the University of Cuenca which will support the CAP program, investigation and research, and give our partners access to abundant resources through specialized projects. We have been able to apply for and gift a $10,000 grant to one of our CAP participants, Proyecto Saman, which will resolve the living situation of four families that were victims of the 2016 earthquake through 2 new homes and 2 home repairs.

Thanks to your support, we unveiled our first annual nonprofit conference entitled "Somos el Cambio" ("We are the Changemakers"), which brought together 22 nonprofit and business professionals for a full-day of learning and networking. We offered 4 workshops focused in the theme of communication, fostering a primary weakness area for the majority of our nonprofit partners, and for the first time ever integrating the nonprofit and business community in a professional setting.

Our journey together to Make Nonprofit History in Ecuador has only just begun. We are excited to unveil new and improved programs and services in our CAP program in 2018, providing more access to even more nonrprofits in Ecuador. We are filled with gratitude that you are able to accompany us on this journey of growth as we become a pioneer for Ecuadorian nonprofits and truly break ground to build stronger, more sustainable leaders and nonprofits in Ecuador.

This is history in the making.

You are ambassadors for change.

Together, we are a force to be reckoned with.

We hope that you can join us this #GivingTuesday, Tuesday November 26 as we act #HeartToHeart and prepare even more impactful, life-changing projects in the CAP Program in 2018, as we compete for stellar bonus prizes on the Global Giving platform, along with a generous $2,000 in matching from the President of our Board, Natasha Verkley. Keep your eyes out for #GivingTuesday at 12AM.

Thank you for believing in us and for maintaining your commitment to this important work.

From our hearts to yours,

Kelly Mitchell

CETAP's Back to School Efforts & Fall Programs

Hard at work studying for fall tests
Hard at work studying for fall tests

We extend our deep and abiding appreciation and heartfelt gratitude for your financial support of the children who attend CETAP-Lucy.  As you know, our celebrated program, whose central goals and mission are to provide early stimulation and psycho-pedagogical attention for children with learning, social, psychological, emotional or physical challenges has proven to promote the success and prospering of our students as life-long learners. Our program supplements and enhances learning outside of regular school hours, employing creativity as one of many foundations upon which the structure of CETAP-Lucy is grounded.

CETAP-Lucy is designed with morning programs and afternoon programs targeted for children from pre-school through early teenagers. During the morning shift, we have been working on the induction process of adaptation, and when this phase was finished we started observing the children’s behavior. Now we are in the process of evaluating every child. For those children who have specialized needs, we have begun the personalized therapy with a focus thus far on speech therapy.

In the afternoon, the academic year of 2017-2018 began with the integrated evaluation of each student both from a psychological and pedagogical point of view in order to begin the new programs. We have also been working on providing help with homework. The personalized tutoring sessions really help the children develop in their areas of weakness. A couple of students are so proud to have earned their first 100% on a school exam! This week the students are studying extra hard for the tests that evaluate the first block of their school year.

These programs are vital and crucial opportunities for the development and growth of these children and their families in rural Chilcapamba. We would like to extend a sincere “thank you” for your continued support of CETAP-Lucy. Your assistance is greatly needed and appreciated, and our work would not be possible without your support. You are making a lasting difference in the life of a child through your sponsorship. We hope to have a long lasting partnership together.

Breaking Ground on the Home for Luis and Evelina!

Luis and Luis Jr Working on the Home
Luis and Luis Jr Working on the Home

We are so happy to report that today Proyecto Saman is breaking ground on Luis and Evelina’s home! Thanks to your outstanding support, $6,675 gross was raised in the month of July between the Hearts for a Home campaign and the English Garden Party in Salinas!

While we did not reach our fundraising goal, as luck will have it, Proyecto Saman was selected by Fundacion Raiz to receive support for building three permanent homes! Luis and Evelina will, after all, receive their home thanks to your generous support, and the foundational support from this disaster relief nonprofit! Fundacion Raiz was created after the April 2016 earthquake to help build temporary shelters, and is now committed to building permanent pre-fab bamboo homes!

Luis and Evelina will receive a traditional coastal home made from bamboo and wood. Thanks to this new connection, the costs that were not raised during the campaign are 100% covered! What this means is that your $6,675 is  going to elevate the home which will double the family’s space, finish the inside of the home, receive all legal paperwork for the property, and contribute to the community infrastructure for electricity, water, roads, and communal spaces!

Thanks to your generosity, Luis and Evelina are reaching a lifelong dream of having a traditional stilt home of their own, made with eco-friendly wood and bamboo! Enjoy the photos below of the family on their land, making the first of many lasting memories in their first real home.
