These services include learning and development and primary healthcare programmes, as well as provision of resources and hands-on support required to meet the needs of our beneficiaries. With over 50 years of experience, Ikamva Labantu has become one of South Africa's largest and most respected non-governmental organisations (NGOs). We remain committed to the economic empowerment of township communities. Ikamva Labantu's grassroots work focuses on the most critical issues in our communities, namely the lack of quality early childhood development programmes, the growing number of orphans, abused and neglected children, and the large number of unsupported and isolated elderly who financially support their families. Our Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) programme presently supports 300 families and reaches 2 000 orphaned children. The programme addresses the broad scope of health, psycho-social, developmental and economic needs of OVC. Our Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme assists over 200 township pre-schools, providing teacher and principal training support, educational equipment, learning materials, and assistance in registering with the Department of Social Development application for subsidies. Through this programme, we reach approximately 12 500 children per annum. Furthermore, our Seniors Programme boasts 19 clubs which reach more than 600 elderly persons every day. We provide psychosocial support, daily nutritious meals and exercise programmes, training income generating activities, capacity-building workshops on health issues, and assistance with applying for government grants.
