Setting the Tone for Next Year

Little Ones of Tierra Bomba Receiving Lunch
Little Ones of Tierra Bomba Receiving Lunch

Dear GlobalGiving friends, we hope that this report finds you, your families, and your friends well during this time when we have been challenged to be the best version of ourselves.

We would like to thank you because in spite of the challenges you have continued or joined our efforts to help children who live in extreme poverty in the Island of Tierra Bomba to receive nutritional care.

Since the month of March 2020, the Colombian government mandated a quarantine that has transitioned gradually to a selective quarantine since the end of September. We continued providing nutritious food items to 950 families, greatly impacted by the quarantine since their economical support is based on tourism, and provided lunch to 650 children with the support of SOS Cartagena.

Our team re-assessed the needs of the families and identified that an early childhood center is greatly needed since not only the fathers but also the mothers and those who are head of the household need to find ways to support their families.

We are committed to building the early childhood center that will provide services from 7AM to 5PM to 280 children between the ages of 2 to 5. The services that will be provided are nutritious food, drinking water, potty training, activities to develop their fine and gross motor skills, health check-ups which they don’t have at their homes while their parents or their mothers’ head of the household work.

In the meantime, while we continue with our efforts to furnish the center with childcare equipment including items for the kitchen, playrooms, library, medical room, nap room, computer room, among others we continue supporting families by providing groceries and lunches to children.

Once again, receive a big Thank You. Your generosity is helping children to develop not only healthier physically but also with hearts and minds with dreams and hope. We believe that together we can continue making a difference giving these children the opportunity to receive the love and care they deserve from the staff and their families who receive the training to engage in positive parenting. These families will have increased chances of staying together, achieving their dreams, and spreading their knowledge and love with everyone and everywhere they go. We hope the best for each and everyone of you, to continue strengthening the bonds with your loved ones during this time and have your dreams also come true.

A Dream Closer to Becoming a Reality

New Space of Casa de los Dones
New Space of Casa de los Dones

Dear GlobalGiving friends, we hope that this report finds you, your families, and your friends well during this time when we have been challenged to be the best version of ourselves.

We would like to thank you because in spite of the challenges you continued or joined our efforts to provide a safe home to more than 25 children who have been rescued from the streets and are closer to making this dream a reality.

We have amazing news, we were able to purchase half of the land where we would be able build the home for our children, next to where they currently live. This would help them to have an easier transition by not having to be relocated and continue participating in the bonding project with the elderly facility across the street, where 40 grandparents live, who Fundacion Dones de Misericordia rescued from abandonment.

In the meantime, while we continue with our efforts to purchase the other half of the land and begin building their home, the boys are enjoying the land by engaging in free play as well as enjoying guided physical activities that are so needed since their academic activities continue being virtual.

The boys continue to receive the best quality of services from a multidisciplinary team to help them increase their adaptive living skills, reduce their challenging behaviors, increase their socially appropriate behaviors, and most importantly feel cared for. Some outcomes include: nutrition recovery, substance use rehabilitation, dental and physical health.

Since the month of June the boys were given the opportunity to choose if they wanted to participate in weekly dance classes from a professional dancer with the goal of helping them to express themselves through dance, heal from their suffering, explore their talents, and future interests. The boys that decided to join have shown commitment, discipline, and passion for dance and as a result they were invited to participate in an end-of-the-year presentation by the dance academy where kids from different places would participate.

Once again, receive a big Thank You. Your generosity is making a dream be closer to a reality, and we believe that together we can do it. Our children receive the love and care they deserve which will stay with them forever, will help them achieve their dreams, and wherever they go they will spread the love and care they receive. We hope the best for each and everyone of you, to continue strengthening the bonds with your loved ones during this time and have your dreams also come true.

Successful, Ongoing COVID-19 Relief

Fun Physical Exercise

Hello Friends of GlobalGiving,

We hope that you and your families are staying safe, healthy, and together during this trying time. We would like to express our gratitude to those who have contributed through donations to help 24 children and adolescents and 44 elderly whose needs have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic with the support of 36 employed staff. In just a little over 3 months we have achieved our funding goal; however, due to the prolonged effects of COVID-19 we are maintaining this project.

Fundación Dones de Misericordia has been able to continue providing the children and elderly with safe homes where they receive the care and love they need especially during this time of uncertainty.

Your support has enabled Fundacion Dones de Misericordia to, not only, meet the additional health and safety needs but also to continue supporting the ongoing needs of the children and elderly whom prior to their arrival to the foundation lacked the care and love they needed.

We have been able to provide additional hygiene supplies (i.e. face masks, alcohol 80%, hand sanitizer, gloves, wipes, vitamin C, disposable cups, hydrogen peroxide solution), healthy meals and snacks (i.e. mandarins, watermelon, oranges, pineapple, fruits) provided in individual/labeled dish/cup/utensils, recreation (i.e. virtual story time, virtual dance classes, painting, exercising activities, etc.), behavioral health services (i.e. consultation and individual), medication management, services from medical staff (i.e. nurses) on site and on-call emergency health assistance 24 hours, and an additional room designated and equipped in case of having a rule-out COVID-19.

Children have continued receiving classes virtually and training to increase their self-care awareness including the importance of washing hands for 20 seconds, increased consumption of water, etc.

Due to the Quarantine mandated by the national and local governments, family and volunteer visits have been cancelled; however, family members are able to communicate with their children via phone, volunteers and health care professionals via Telehealth.

Additionally, caregivers/staff have received specialized training and provided with the supplies recommended by the health and government agencies. For example, health and safety protocols include adding a hands free/foot activated hand sanitizer dispenser located at the entrance of both homes for hand sanitizing prior entrance and exit, surgical masks, etc. to minimize risk of contamination.

Once again, Thank You. Your generosity these past few months have made a meaningful impact in the lives of the children and elderly but have also helped us focus on continuing to help them decrease their suffering by receiving love and strengthening the bond of the children who have been spending more time together. We hope the best for each and everyone of you, that you can also continue strengthening the bonds with your loved ones during this time and we will together overcome this pandemic.
