Mother assisted
Mother assisted

D is the head of her family and supports her three children, and grandchild with the money she gets working as a hairdresser. She trained in eyebrow design and brushing and cutting courses in the Beauty Office of SaúdeCriança, D never gave up and is now studying colorimetry too.

However, even before training, she rented a room to work in where she paid R$300 a month to be able to use the space from Wednesdays to Saturdays, and eventually until Sundays. D determination also made her go after changes in her own house, which had problems of water permeation, leaks in the roof and a lack of security on the doors and windows. Because of this, she was benefited by the Housing Program of the association; she was able to have the toilet flush, doors and windows replaced.

There is a distinct sense of togetherness in the family. the older sister, became pregnant at 17. As the child is only 9 months old, the adolescent had been unable to study or work, and even though the father of the child helps, she relies on the support of her mother. Without the help of the father of the family, the hairdresser keeps going everyday and never gives up fighting for her family.

Family Testimonial

“Sometimes, people would come to my salon and request something to eat. Since I didn’t know how to make desserts or savory pastries, I saw the culinary course as an opportunity to join two things together”.

After participating in the workshops and classes for cosmetology at Saúde Criança, Maria, 30 years old, was able to open her own salon. However, during a difficult period, with her ex-husband out of work and unable to attract customers, she had to close the establishment and the family had to survive on INSS benefits, received by the eldest daughter Lauiza, 9 years old. At this point Maria resolved to begin the culinary course of the Employment Program. “Sometimes, people would come to my salon and request something to eat. Since I didn’t know how to make desserts or savory pastries, I saw the culinary course as an opportunity to join two things together”, she recounts.

Thanks to this initiative and the Housing Program, she will reopen her beauty salon, which underwent renovation, and now it will also function as a snack bar. To help with the equipment, upon concluding the Employment Program, Maria received a salon chair, a washing stand and a food mixer. With the donations from Transform a Reality, she also received an electric stove. “If I lose the INSS benefits, I will at least have a way to sustain my children”, she explains.

In addition to her eldest daughter Lauiza, Maria  also has two more children. The youngest, 3 years old, has a heart problem, persistent asthma and food allergies and was referred to the Lagoa Hospital by Saúde Criança. At that time, Isaque, 5 years old and the middle child, was having anxiety attacks that were aggravated during the period of separation of the parents, and the eldest child, Lauiza, presented emotional problems and hyperactivity. Today, after doing therapy provided by Saúde Criança, the two are much better. Ester also presents an improved clinical status and still attends Child Education Municipal Daycare in their community.
