Continued lockdowns and crises

Dear friends and supporters,

While we move back to some normality in the west and reflect on the past few months, the President of Sri Lanka has announced a state of national economic emergency, as the Covid19 situation also continues to worsen.

Positive cases and deaths are continuing to rise dramatically, and another strict lockdown has been imposed, which affects the delivery of our vocational training classes.
Fortunately, the girls in Senehasa have been allowed to continue to use the TFT bakery to make bread and pastries learnt from their earlier lessons, and this has been their greatest pleasure during these unimaginably difficult times.

Despite the many frustrations, we are excited to report that as soon as this latest lockdown ends, we are ready to install the WiFi and technology needed to provide online classes for 100 institutionalised girls. This means we can expand our vocational training programme, and enable the girls who are studying O’levels to reconnect with their schools and complete their examinations, which will make a huge difference to their lives.

There is also happy and positive news to share from the Heartbeat Centre, where a new computer and printer has been purchased to support the English, music and art therapy classes, which are continuing to provide a very welcome distraction for the girl victims who are all suffering from deep emotional trauma.

Art loving mum Anisha, escaping from domestic abuse said the classes have been a lifeline. Her court case has been prolonged because of the court closures due to lockdowns, and she has been living under threats for her life and that of her child.

We are relieved to report a successful outcome, as the court has thankfully placed her husband under arrest, and ruled mum and baby can stay together. She will be supported in our safe transition home, and given education and life skills training on her new journey to freedom, to reintegrate into society and be who she wants and deserves to be.

Thank you again for each of your donations and continued support.

Yours sincerely,

Joel

CREATING DREAMS AND DREAMERS

Dear friends and supporters,

I hope you and your families are keeping safe and well.

Despite the immense challenges of Covid-19 restrictions and strict lockdowns in Sri Lanka, with your support and our amazing local TFT team, we have installed WIFI and two computers at the TFT Heartbeat Centre which provides safe shelter and protection for 2 single mothers and babies, and 10 girls escaping domestic violence, abuse, and sex trafficking. Without HBC, two babies would now be in orphanages, and the girls would be sent to harmful and often abusive remand homes for their 'protection'.

Our two UK volunteers are teaching English and art therapy, and work online to help broken but ambitious girls achieve their O and A'level qualifications and pursue their dreams.

Newcomer Vishani (14) has never been to school and has spent her whole life just trying to survive. She loves to dance as movement helps to overcome her anger issues after suffering years of abuse, so we asked for advice from our friends at Arakavila Dance and Theatre Foundation (ADTF) in Colombo. We are so pleased that they have offered to support Vishani once lockdowns have lifted, and will help guide her towards a career in Dance therapy as she dreams to help other girls just like her.

Just before the latest lockdown, the electric water pump broke down at Ruhunu orphanage which meant our 20 TFT housemothers were having to carry water from the well in buckets, to keep 72 under 5’s hydrated, washed, and the orphanage clean.

In the space of a few hours Mr Percy our Country Director had sent us the quote of £153 including £20 labour, and fortunately, we took a big leap of faith to authorize immediate installation in the belief our generous supporters would come forward and donate, to ensure we can keep all these babies, and children healthy and safe during this very challenging time.

Kind regards,

Joel

COVID-19 CRISIS IN SRI LANKA

Dear Friends and supporters,

While much reporting has taken place of the terrible situation in India as the pandemic takes hold and hundreds of thousands a day are coming forward with infections, Sri Lanka remains a silent Covid partner in the news.

With a population of 21 million people, present daily cases are at a record high with more people dying than at any time during this pandemic; and the numbers are critically rising.

Their Future Today is one of a dwindling number of UK charities that concentrates all its efforts in Sri Lanka, supporting the most vulnerable, and providing a lifeline for families who are in strict lockdown, and without any income.

Thanks to you and the generosity of our supporters, we have been able to act quickly and decisively to so far help 100 TFT-supported families, covid patients, and the most vulnerable living in remote areas in the Southern Province, and distributed or delivered emergency dry food parcels including soap and sanitizer.

Working with the local police authorities, we are hugely grateful to Mr. Percy and our dedicated TFT team, who are pulling out all the stops to coordinate and make this very challenging work possible.

We have also created information in Sinhala about the importance of handwashing and hygiene, which has been sent out through WhatsApp groups to pass on. So far we have reached over 10,000 people.

A crisis crystallizes what really matters, and while we’re working hard towards ending institutionalization and changing the world for thousands of children, our work at the grassroots to help one child and one family at a time is pivotal at this critical time, and we can't thank you enough for your continued and loyal support.

Kind regards,

Joel
