Stand With Kerala - Online Education Support

Since the pandemic has affected every sectors across our country, the educational institutions are shut down as part of precautionary measures for fighting COVID 19. The government has introduced online education where the children can receive education through mass medias from their own homes. This can be made practical only when the children has access to the infra structures through which online sources can be accessed such as smart television and internet connections.

The problem emerged when the innovative way of providing education was implemented across Kerala. There were exemption cases where the children couldn’t access to the mass media as they were not able to afford buying smart televisions in their home.  Thus poverty became a major factor in providing the children with quality education.  Don Bosco Veedu society with the help of GlobalGiving has donated 12 smart televisions for the children who lack access to the technologies. The televisions were provided as a step to prevent drop outs with the reason of lack of technologies.

We collaborated with an American Malayalee group called “Stand with Kerala” and identified 12 children who are in need of smart television for pursuing their education during this pandemic period. We organised the event in the presence of Hon’ble minister Shri.  Kadakampalli Surendran ( Ministster of tourism and devaswom, Government of Kerala). The parents of the children were called upon and the televisions were handed over to them. The televisons were distributed and the feedback was collected from the beneficiaries. The whole event was documented and uploaded in You tube. The link is provided below.

Wear Masks Save Lives.

The pandemic has affected the whole world and has put the human life in peril. The health workers are trying their level best for ensuring safety of lives of people. The women from Karimadom slum has also ensured their participation in safeguarding the lives of people by introducing best quality stitched masks to the market.

Since the pandemic affected the human life seriously, the demand for masks hiked in the markets but then the availability of stitched masks with good quality couldn’t meet the rise in demand for it. In light of the you tube training videos and other professional advices we trained 15 marginalised women who were interested in stitching cloths. They were trained for stitching masks without a compromise in its quality.

The women introduced the masks of two types:

  1. Mask with cloth layers
  2. Mask without cloth layers.

Mask with cloth layers were more efficient and could be re used after proper washing. Mask without cloth layers are one time usable and has to be disposed properly after the use.

We are happy to announce that this initiative which was started as a short term livelihood activity has been sustained till now and is being running successfully without a slight compromise in its quality. The women has introduced around 40,000 masks with cloth layers and 16000 masks without cloth layers in the market during the lockdown period when the supply of masks couldn’t meet the demand for it. The raw materials for the manufacturing of masks were made available only because of the contributions from the donors from GlobalGiving and some of the local donors.

ONAM - "New beginning - New clothes"

Our director distributing new clothes for children
Our director distributing new clothes for children

Onam is the most major festivals of we Keralites. It is one of the festival where we people unite despite of religion and caste which makes it a festival celebrated with  secularism among the Keraites. Onam 2020 is so special for us as we haven’t observed the festival since 2018 flood which continued on 2019 as well. This year we face the pandemic which again prevent us from celebrating Onam in true means. But still being affected by lockdown the public as  a relaxation technique has agreed to celebrate onam within the constraints because this festival provides a family feeling and a sense of belonging for each and every people from Kerala.

This onam will also be celebrated at Don Bosco, Trivadrum where we have most of the street children during the period of lockdown and has given shelter and nutrition. Onam is all about new beginning where we leave past miseries. The shelter home children also has a past which has lead them to the streets with no food shelter or clothings.

The donations we received from everyone through GlobalGiving which has amounted $206 has helped us in providing “Onakkodi” (New clothes which the Keralites receive on the day of Thiruvonam) for 18 children at Don Bosco shelter home. We sincerely express our gratitude for all the well wishers who has extended their helping hands for providing the children with new clothings and become part in their little happiness. Thanks to GlobalGiving and its donors for making the ONAM for these children colorful with new clothings.
