Christmas and Outing to the Zoo

Hello everybody!

Greetings from Thailand. We trust that you had a great start into 2020 and hope that it will be an exciting year for you. Here at Tamar Center we had an amazing start into the new year with a day of reflection and goal setting on the 3rd of January. But on the 8th of January we got a special treat for everyone: We were able to visit the Pattaya Elephant Sanctuary with all our women. Most of them had never been close to an Elephant before and some were very scared but, in the end, everyone enjoyed it. We fed the elephants, showered them, walked through the jungle with them and even took a bath together. Everybody enjoyed the outing and we will go back in March with the older children so that they can enjoy it as well.

December was an exciting month for our Children. Thanks to “Cyclists with Compassion” who did a Sponsor Ride in Thailand we were able to take all the Tamar Children to fun outing to the Open Zoo in Sri Racha. You can see on the pictures how they enjoyed this outing. And during our yearly Christmas Party there were many happy faces, as the children all unwrapped their presents. The kids really got into them and played the whole day and long into the night. Especially nice was it to see the younger kids “reading” – better looking – at a book. Most of them did not own any books, but for this years Christmas we got each of them a book and also stocked our Nursery with a bigger selection of books so that the Nursery Teachers have a bigger selection to read to the children from.

In the next months we will also get at least two more children as two of the women that we have taken in in the last year are pregnant. Both women are doing well, and we expect to have the new babies join us in March/April of this year. Also, over the Christmas break, our houses were full of many more children as many came to visit their mothers in the school holidays. It was nice to see them re-united and we are also happy to see that one woman has decided to keep her child with her now and not to sent him back to the grandparents. But it is also a challenge, as they are not used to looking after a baby. We try to give them as much help as possible and encourage them.

Thank you for helping us look after these precious children.

Great time of team building!

But looking back we are also very thankful for a great time of Christmas Celebrations and a good, needed break for everyone in between Christmas and the New Year. We had a nice Celebration at a local Hotel, and everyone enjoyed their gifts, the puppet show and the great food and games. December was a very busy month for everyone. We had many orders for our products and had several stands at local Christmas Markets where we were able to sell our products. Our Bakery had to do many hours of overtime, as more and more orders came in for our special Christmas cookies and cakes.

January will be a time of big change for everyone at Tamar. Four of our women are leaving us and starting a yearlong Hairdressing and Beauty school. We are very happy that they enrolled there, as we know this school very well and they will get some excellent education there. Two of our women have done this school last year, graduated in December and are now working in the Tamar Hair Salon in Soi 6 to reach out to women that are still trapped in the bars. Both have done very well at the school and we like to see their skills now put into practice – which has already brought in many new customers to our shop. Three other women are moving to Khon Kaen and will be participating in a six-month long school, they will return afterwards to us. Currently we also have two pregnant women will us, they are at similar stages of their pregnancies and so we will have two new babies with us at the end of March or early April. As you can see – many changes!

In February we are looking forward to several different teams coming to visit us and work with us, especially for our big Valentines Outreach where we hope to reach hundreds of women that are currently working in the bars. We will have the big Outreach on the 14th and will follow up with a Party at a local Hotel on Monday the 17th for all the women that are interested in joining Tamar.

Thank you for your support of our work and for making it possible for us to help the women and their children here in Pattaya.

Have a very special 2020!!!

New Year - many movements in our Houses

Great time of team building!

January will bring big changes for our housing situation at Tamar. At the end of the year one women completed her time with us and moved to Bangkok to work in a 7/11 Shop and to be closer to her family. Also, this month four women will leave us to take part in a year long Hairdressing and Beauty school. We are very happy that they have enrolled in this. The school is here in Pattaya, but except of one woman all of them will move to other housing that is closer to the school. Another three women are leaving us to attend a six-month training in Khon Kaen, which is about 6 hours drive from Pattaya away. They will come back after that Training and will hopefully put their new learned skills to great use.

But our beds will not stay empty long, as two of our new women are pregnant and will give birth around March/April of this year. We are also doing many outreaches to invite more women to leave the bars. It was a huge blessing that we had spare accommodation at the end of the last year when the latest pregnant women suddenly came to our Outreach Center and asked if she could stay with us.  She was already five months pregnant and really wanted to stop working in the bars. She is very happy to be with us, we sent her to do some checkups and as far as the Doctors can tell, her baby is healthy.

Thank you for helping us to be ready for each new woman. We are also starting in 2020 to give each new woman that joins a big welcome pack with new towels, pillows, toiletries, etc. to make them feel even more welcome. All of that is only possible through your generosity.

Thank you!
