YALLA - Youth and Leaders Living Actively

We're on a mission to remove social and economic barriers that confront refugee and immigrant youth living in the United States. Without barriers, hope thrives. YALLA combines the promise of education and the passion of soccer to inspire refugee and immigrant youth to achieve a college education. Since 2010, we've helped 1,200 youth improve literacy scores, academic achievement, and school attendance. In the past two years, four-year universities accepted 88% of our college-bound seniors, with an average of $19,000 in academic scholarships per student. Despite war, despite poverty, despite social and language barriers, YALLA scholars will go to college.
YALLA Stands #withMalala
This project will spread Malala's mission by empowering the refugee and immigrant girls of YALLA San Diego to host a screening of 'He Named Me Malala' in their community. They will recruit neighboring refugee girls to attend the screening, join the YALLA community, and collaborate with the El Camino High School's Girls Learn International (GLI) chapter to forward their academic and social progress.
