Economic Empowerment in Gulu!

The goal of Women’s Global Empowerment Fund is to provide economic opportunities, giving women the tools necessary to create sustainable development. By looking back at global precedents and looking forward to what is possible, Women’s Global is poised to create a sustainable organization based on our current Credit Plus model and the belief that the true power of microfinance is in its potential to transform. We believe this transformation can only happen if our program continues to be relevant and provocative.

Women’s Global Empowerment Fund was founded upon the belief that microfinance can be a revolutionary concept, and when bundled with educational programming, can build social capital and increase the potential for women’s empowerment and success. It is this belief that created our Credit Plus program.

Women’s Global Credit Plus program combines microcredit services with health, nutrition, family planning, and basic business education into a single service reaching under served women in cities, villages and rural areas. Through our Credit Plus program, participants will receive a microcredit loan bundled with social and educational services, allowing them to create an opportunity for sustainability, increased food security and health and nutrition. Investing in women and families by creating a social network provides not only small business loans, but educational opportunities as well. This can help women to build livelihoods and a brighter future for the families. Our program goal is poverty reduction, human security enhancement and women’s empowerment. Our motivation is the belief that very poor women can rise above poverty with dignity.

In the second quarter of 2011 WGEF gave out 131 new loans, included 20 new borrowing groups; average loan size is $31 usd; loans at risk remains at 0. Please visit our website for more information, www.wgefund.org

Women’s Global Empowerment Fund offers microcredit loans and educational programming to women in northern Uganda, specifically in and around Gulu. Our strategy is to provide women with the framework necessary to create viable opportunities for themselves and their families. Through grassroots strategies, marginalized women are given the tools necessary to alleviate poverty thus facilitating sustainable development and empowerment.

Project Summary:

The Big Smile Dental Clinic was held May 29th thru June 1st for clients and families participating in the Credit Plus program.  A dental/medical team from Denver, Colorado traveled to Gulu to provide free dental care and hygiene to Women’s Global. Dr. Mark Novolen, DDS and volunteers worked with Gulu based dentist Dr. Joseph, to provide quality dental care and education to the women and families in our program.

A full range of dental services was provided, including:  fillings, extractions, etc.The clinic will be held in the Women’s Global offices, with assistance from volunteers, ensuring that our clients are organized and their dental needs are met. This is an important opportunity for our clients and their families, to receive quality dental care and education that will last a lifetime, adding to the goal of creating sustainable development for our participants.

Over 2.5 days the dentists were able to see over 170 patients, relieving pain and providing critical medical care. Our peer counselors participated, running the check-in and check-out procedures, helping patient who were in pain, ensuring that the clinic was a success for their community.

We hope you continue to support WGEF’s Dental Clinic and the right to access quality dental care in post conflict northern Uganda.

Literacy 2011

Literacy class 2011
Literacy class 2011

In March of 2011 our 4th literacy class began. We have 100+ women and 97 children participating this year. This program is critical to the women of the region who were unable to attend school, learning basic literacy skills, due to the long, brutal civil insurgency in northern Uganda. Many of our clients are formerly abducted women, who were forced to be sex slave, child soldiers, and LRA (Lords Resistance Army) 'wives'.

Understanding that language can be a very elitist activity, it is critical that women learn to read and write, creating a balance between those in power and authority and our clients. Our clients know that to be successful, independent and leaders in their communities they need to read and write in English (English is the formal language in Uganda). To conduct basic business transactions at the bank and with customers, it is vital that our clients have basic literacy skills.

Please help us continue this important and impactful program for women in Gulu, northern Uganda.
