GLOW is Happening!

Our 2017 has been off to an amazing start with all the work happening at Clara Luna, most notably GLOW camp. Our camp will be held from March 29-April 2 for 45 participants. Right now, we are in full planning mode. That includes making sure transportation, lodging, food, and snacks are all in order. That lesson plans are finalized and facilitators begin practicing their sessions. Girls are beginning to prepare by attending a weekly youth group and being introduced to the themes of GLOW.

Besides all the planning, spirits are high and we are excited and energized for this camp. In just a few short months we will be there!

Thanks for staying up to date!

The Beginning: Mobile Library and Kid Centers

One of the communities - Tabuchilla
One of the communities - Tabuchilla

Nearly nine months after the earthquake and there is still work to be done.

Clara Luna is working diligently to continue with our earthquake relief projects in the affected areas of San Vicente, Tabuchilla, Bahia de Caraquez, Rio Muchacho, Tabuga, and Canoa. Our work is primarily directed at children, ensuring that their lives are less impacted by the destruction of the earthquake. After a natural disaster, the first instincts are projects focusing on food, medicine, and shelter. Now that all of those needs have been sufficiently taken care of, it is important to focus on the stability of the children in these areas and providing them with spaces to be children.

After conducting months of children activities in the shleters and communities that have been affected by the earthquake, we have found a way to continue to improve the lives of children and lessen their trauma in these areas while we are not there with mobile libraries and kid centers. Six community leaders have been identified that will be responsible for these mobile libraries. They will have designated areas and times during the week where they will bring childrens books and activities, provided by Clara Luna.

To begin these mobile centers, Clara Luna has begun collecting the materials that will make up our mobile libraries (books, boxes, mats to sit on, and art supplies). We are currently planning a two-day training for February 17 and 18th where the six community leaders will visit Puerto Lopez to learn more about working with children, the effects of trauma on children, and how to run a mobile library. There they will be provided with the materials to begin their mobile libraries to take back to their communities.

We are inspired by your donations and this project could not be possible without your generous support.

Looking forward to sharing with you the impact these childrens centers and mobile libraries have on their communities.

October at Clara Luna

The month of October was very busy at Clara Luna with the month starting with only 2 volunteers, Geni and Xanthia from Australia. Needless to say the fun never ended. In Club de Niños we did crafts of bears, chickens, elephants, sunflowers and frogs which would have been impossible without the help from dedicated donors. Especially for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos we made some beautiful lanky skeletons. In English different ages learnt a variety of topics with the youngest ones learning all about “Our World” and the oldest ones concentrating on the present perfect tense. On the third weekend of October we travelled up north to Bahia, San Vicente and Canoa to do activities with the kids affected by the earthquake. This eye opening experience included visiting a tent city where kids are still living under tarps 6 months after the earthquake. Shortly after this weekend, 3 new volunteers came to join; Tatiana from Belgium, Sara from Germany and Lisa from France. With the extra volunteers, everything ran smoothly. At the end of October we hosted our monthly event for the families of Clara Luna. This month we had a soccer tournament. We were able to rent out the soccer field in the center of town for four hours. We had four teams of children, one of teenages, and two of parents. At the end of the tournament, each child received a recycled art medal. We are looking forward to all our events coming up  at the end of the year and our big holiday party in December.
