Fun activities during hard times

In March, XSProject had a productive month as school started for the children. They also received various donations in terms of toys and staple food commodities. Based on the facilities provided by XSProject, we prepared some fun activities like scavenger hunt, played various games, and organised a library club activity with Jakarta International School (JIS) students. Whilst continuing to follow strict protocols and maintaining their health, considering the current situation, we wanted them to still be able to learn through other educational activities and play outdoors.

The Jakarta International School (JIS) offers a collaboration where their High School students create various programs and extra-curricular activities. The school can collaborate with other non-profit organisations under the umbrella JIS cares (JIS Peduli). A few examples of their activities are Library, Garden Club and ‘take a bow drama’. XSProject children participated in all the three activities.

The first one was at the XSLibrary where the kids interacted with the JIS students online by doing an activity given by them. On normal circumstances, the JIS students would come and read books or play different games with the children. The second one was the Garden Club activity where the JIS students come and plant trees in our facility. The third activity was ‘take a bow’ drama club. Due to the pandemic, the JIS students created a website with skits/games using videos and sent it to us for us to practice and play with the children.

The main idea is to provide activities that will keep the children busy and happy but also have some activities that will make them mobile so they are not only sitting in one place. Overall, it was an enjoyable set of activities that enliven the spirits of the children by allowing them to interact with JIS students in a new way.

Our continuous efforts to keep things moving allows us and the children to feel positive and motivated.

We thank you, our customers and community for their support and dedication to our project.

Health Service to start the New Year

Grade 6 were doing homework

XSProject starts the new year in the new facility with many activities to keep the children busy while continue to follow the pandemic protocol.

They continue to do distance learning and since we now have more rooms, we can provide smaller group of students to study together. The place is also providing a space for the boys to do some exercise or extra room to move around in an open space.

We want the children to continue to stay healthy. This year we are lucky to welcome dr. Berli who would love to volunteering his busy time, to come twice a month to help us in running our health programs for this year. We started with checking their weight and height and he will conduct interviews to some of the children who are underweight, to find out more about their diets, their habits, etc. We will provide the children with vitamin and worm medicine.

This coming month of February, dr. Berli will meet with all the moms and will discuss about Family Planning.

In December we welcomed also a volunteer eye doctor who conducted an eye checkup for the Primary school and 3 of the students need to wear glasses.

Indah was in tears when the doctor told her that she needs glasses, but she is very happy now to finally can see things better.

There will be more activities for all students in this coming month that we will share.

Thank you for your support. Your donations through GlobalGiving will help us continue providing necessary health service for the children and their parents, so they continue to be healthy in this uncertain pandemic.

FINAL REPORT ON - OUR COMMUNITY PROJECT

Our HS and College Students
Our HS and College Students

It has been over 10 years since we started this project where we partner with a trach picker community in the Cirendeu area on the outskirts of the capital city of Jakarta, Indonesia.

The challenge that we faced a decade ago has not changed. The community of about 75 to 100 families of trash pickers are still living in the garbage dumps and picking trash that they sell to survive with income just enough to get by a day at a time, and they continue to get exposed to diseases and hazardous waste.

XSProject continues to believe that the only way to solve the problem is to break the generational cycle of trash picking by providing education for the children and tackle the most critical family needs by providing food, clean water, medical treatment and housing to give stability to the families. With an education, a young person can get a god job and move his/her family away from the garbage dump.

When we started 11 years ago, we were focusing on K-12 education. Today, the children that were in Primary School have graduated from College and have found a place to work. At the moment, we have 7 students in college and there will be more Grade 12 who plan to advance their educations. The parents now see and understand the importance of education for the benefit of their children.

Getting a good education in a better school required parents to get official documentation. This encouraged the parents to organize themselves to prepare the paperwork they need, such as Marriage Certificates, Identification Cards, Birth Certificates, etc. XSProject makes sure that each family has complete and proper documentation.

In providing what the community needs, XSProject has also provided  water tanks, communal bathrooms, and a fire extinguisher to 10 groups of trash pickers. We also regularly help to build carts the trash pickers need to collect trash.

Health service is the second focus for us. Making sure that the children regularly receive vitamins and worm medicine, immunizations, and access to the doctor when they get sick.

The parents also receive medical check-ups and family planning programs for the moms.

As we are near the end of the year 2020, it is time for us to wrap up this project, close the chapter and open a new chapter with a new project for more years to come.

We have completed building the new community facility to help the children learn more skills and knowledge outside the formal school. The parents can continue receiving health services and we are also plan to expand our program to the community surrounding our new facility.

So, we will keep moving forward with more programs and improvements for the better lives not just the trash pickers but for the community around us.

We would like you to continue to stay connected with us through our other project on GlobalGiving – ‘Give an education to a trash picker’s child’ and to our new upcoming exciting project.
