2016 Progress report

Teachers Attending The Workshops
Teachers Attending The Workshops

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for your continued support of our Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) project. According to statistics, more than 2.5 billion people live in rural areas of developing countries which are underserved because development is disproportionately concentrated in urban areas.  Zimbabwe is no exception.  It has a population of over 14 million. More than 75% of the population of Zimbabwe lives in the rural areas where teachers and students have limited access to technology. The majority of the rural schools do not offer computer training because they simply dont have the funds to purchase computers and the teachers lack computer skills.

After high school, over 70% of rural students drop out of school due to poverty and they end up going to urban areas to look for jobs yet they are ill-prepared to enter the workforce.

The ultimate goal of this project is to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban schools. The following are some of the positive outcomes linked to the use of technology in schools:

  • Improvement in the quality of education as the teachers will have better tools for teaching
  • Improvement in students' academic performance
  • Increase in economic opportunities as there is a need for computer skills in today's workforce

Through your donations you are a playing a major role in helping us address the "Digital Divide". To date we have worked in collaboration with our in-country partner, Computers For Zimbabwean Schools (CZWs) to provide five computer training workshops to 25 teachers.   The workshops were a big success! Here is what some of the teachers had to say:

In His Own Words By The Headmaster

"We are grateful for the workshops that have been conducted by the Tekeshe Foundation with the help of the donors. The workshops have been a great eye opener! During one of these workshops, the instructor gave us an overview of the 21st century tools that CZWs offers for teaching. He demonstrated how to use a projector. This topic generated a lot of interest among the teachers. As the headmaster of Rimbi High school, I made a commitment to the teachers that I would purchase some projectors for our school.

I am also very grateful to the Tekeshe Foundation  and to the donors for bringing the internet to Rimbi High! "

In His Own Words By One Of The Teachers

"We thank you very much for providing the funds that enable us to attend computer training workshops.  We have benefited tremendously from these workshops.  We kindly ask you to help us with computers that way we can have hands-on training during the workshops. This would be of great help.  Thanks again for helping us."

Update On Laptops For The Teachers

Though this proect is a big success, one of the challenges is that the teachers have limited access to computers. We are pleased to announce that we are in the process of forming a parnternship with a company that offers a program for teachers to purchase laptops through monthly installments. We will give you an update on this program in our next progress report.

Thanks again for all your support!

Best Regards,

Thelma

Chicken Project 2016 Progress Report

Women holding chickens
Women holding chickens

Thank you so much for your continued support of this project. We are pleased to announce that the "Chicken Project" is a big sucess. To date the six women who are participating in the project have bought 4 batches of chicks (100 chicks per batch). To date the women made a profit of $600.00. They divided the money among themselves resulting in each woman receiving $100 from selling the chickens. The women are very grateful to have have earned some money to help their families. This money goes a long way in these rural areas. Here is what some of the women had to say:

In Their Own Words

"We are very grateful to the donors for helping us. This money helped us a lot. This project has really lifted up our spirits.  I cant find the words to adequately express how we feel.  I take care of two grand children. With this money I was able to buy food and medicines for my grandchildren. Thank you so much for giving us the money to start the project. This project has changed our lives!

"I also want to thank the donors for all their help. With the money I earned I was able to buy school supplies and food for my family.

"I didnt know where I was going to get money to pay may son's exam fee. This money came in handy.  Thank you so much for helping us"

"With the money I earned I was able to buy food and shoes for my children. I thank the donors for all their kindness. I feel fortunate to be among the women who were chosen to participate in this project"

What We Are Planning For 2016

  • Build a bigger chicken coop with several compartments. This way the women dont have to wait until they have sold all the chickens inorder for them to purchace the next batch. They will place the new chicks in one compartment and put the older chickens in another compartment.
  • Raise egg laying chickens as well

As you can see from the attached pictures and from what the women had to say, you are playing a major role in tranforming their lives.

Thank you so much for all your support!!!

Happy New Year!

Best wishes,

Thelma

2015 Pre-school Progress Update

Children At Our Pre-School
Children At Our Pre-School

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for your continued support of our pre-school program. This program is at the heart of our organization and is our strategy for providing the best start in life to children in these rural areas.

Research has found out that children who complete pre-school programs are more advanced in literacy, creativity, initiative, and social skills and they are more likely to succeed in school and to end up as productive members of society. Sadly the majority of children in the rural areas of Chipinge in Zimbabwe have no access to early childhood development and learning programs. Through your donations we are able to enroll 30 children in our pre-school. Our goal is to increase the number to 90 in 2016.

As you can you see in the attached pictures, the pre-school program is doing very well. A typical day at the pre-school includes structured playtime, story time, games, singing and playing with all kinds of toys including educational toys. The children's favorite time is when they get to play with the toys and ride bikes. The toys and bikes were donated by New England Pentecostal ministries and friends of the Foundation in the US. Every year we partner with churches in New England to send a 40 foot container of medicines, food and clothing, school supplies and toys to Zimbabwe.

Though the program is a big success we still have many needs. The following are our goals for 2016

•  Increase the number of children enrolled in our school to 90
•  Hire two additional teachers.
•  Provide a building which will be able to accommodate 90 kids.
•  Provide tables and chairs, currently the kids sit on the floor.
•  Add an outdoor play area with swings

I am pleased to announce that we will begin building the new pre-school facility in January 2016.

Thank you for helping these little ones have the best start in life! May your hearts be filled with lots of joy and laughter this holiday season as you reflect on the difference you are making in the lives of these children.

I wish you a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2016!

Best wishes,

Thelma
