What We Accomplished Together - Highlights From 2015

Kids Who Attend Our Pre-School
Kids Who Attend Our Pre-School

Thank you very much for helping us empower underprivileged rural youth in Zimbabwe to reach their full potential through education, skill development, and leadership training. We accomplished a lot in 2015 —thanks to your help!. Here are some highlights.

1. We provided school uniforms, school fees and school supplies to 25 students

2. We provided scout uniforms to 20 scouts and we sponsored 10 scouts to attend 2 scouting events. We also provided funds for the scouts to host a scout event in Rimbi village. The Manicaland Province Scout Association Commissioner, Transport commissioner and scouts from neighbouring villages also attended the event.

3. We enrolled 30 children in our pre-school

4. At Christmas time we gave toys, candy and cookies to over 300 kids in Rimbi village.

In his Own Words By One Of The Students

"I am giving thanks to you for your financial support.  I was able to complete my studies at Rimbi High school, something that I didnt think would be possible because of financial difficulties. I am now attending Great Zimbabwe University. This would not have been possible without your help! I am very grateful for the opportunity to get an education. My future looks bright now. There are many students in the rural areas who want to get an education but are not able to do so because they dont have the funds. I thank you so much for supporting this program."

What We Have Planned for 2016

  • In an effort to bridge the digital divide that exists between urban and rural youth, we will be enhancing our Youth Program to include Basic Computer Training. We will also be providing Cultural Music lessons

  • Start construction on the new building that will house our pre-school and our youth centre.

As you can see from the pictures, we accomplished a lot in 2015. These accomplishments would not have been possible without your support. Through your donations you are playing a major role in tranforming the lives of rural students!.

Thanks again

Best wishes,

Thelma

2016 Progress report

Teachers Attending The Workshops
Teachers Attending The Workshops

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for your continued support of our Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) project. According to statistics, more than 2.5 billion people live in rural areas of developing countries which are underserved because development is disproportionately concentrated in urban areas.  Zimbabwe is no exception.  It has a population of over 14 million. More than 75% of the population of Zimbabwe lives in the rural areas where teachers and students have limited access to technology. The majority of the rural schools do not offer computer training because they simply dont have the funds to purchase computers and the teachers lack computer skills.

After high school, over 70% of rural students drop out of school due to poverty and they end up going to urban areas to look for jobs yet they are ill-prepared to enter the workforce.

The ultimate goal of this project is to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban schools. The following are some of the positive outcomes linked to the use of technology in schools:

  • Improvement in the quality of education as the teachers will have better tools for teaching
  • Improvement in students' academic performance
  • Increase in economic opportunities as there is a need for computer skills in today's workforce

Through your donations you are a playing a major role in helping us address the "Digital Divide". To date we have worked in collaboration with our in-country partner, Computers For Zimbabwean Schools (CZWs) to provide five computer training workshops to 25 teachers.   The workshops were a big success! Here is what some of the teachers had to say:

In His Own Words By The Headmaster

"We are grateful for the workshops that have been conducted by the Tekeshe Foundation with the help of the donors. The workshops have been a great eye opener! During one of these workshops, the instructor gave us an overview of the 21st century tools that CZWs offers for teaching. He demonstrated how to use a projector. This topic generated a lot of interest among the teachers. As the headmaster of Rimbi High school, I made a commitment to the teachers that I would purchase some projectors for our school.

I am also very grateful to the Tekeshe Foundation  and to the donors for bringing the internet to Rimbi High! "

In His Own Words By One Of The Teachers

"We thank you very much for providing the funds that enable us to attend computer training workshops.  We have benefited tremendously from these workshops.  We kindly ask you to help us with computers that way we can have hands-on training during the workshops. This would be of great help.  Thanks again for helping us."

Update On Laptops For The Teachers

Though this proect is a big success, one of the challenges is that the teachers have limited access to computers. We are pleased to announce that we are in the process of forming a parnternship with a company that offers a program for teachers to purchase laptops through monthly installments. We will give you an update on this program in our next progress report.

Thanks again for all your support!

Best Regards,

Thelma

Chicken Project 2016 Progress Report

Women holding chickens
Women holding chickens

Thank you so much for your continued support of this project. We are pleased to announce that the "Chicken Project" is a big sucess. To date the six women who are participating in the project have bought 4 batches of chicks (100 chicks per batch). To date the women made a profit of $600.00. They divided the money among themselves resulting in each woman receiving $100 from selling the chickens. The women are very grateful to have have earned some money to help their families. This money goes a long way in these rural areas. Here is what some of the women had to say:

In Their Own Words

"We are very grateful to the donors for helping us. This money helped us a lot. This project has really lifted up our spirits.  I cant find the words to adequately express how we feel.  I take care of two grand children. With this money I was able to buy food and medicines for my grandchildren. Thank you so much for giving us the money to start the project. This project has changed our lives!

"I also want to thank the donors for all their help. With the money I earned I was able to buy school supplies and food for my family.

"I didnt know where I was going to get money to pay may son's exam fee. This money came in handy.  Thank you so much for helping us"

"With the money I earned I was able to buy food and shoes for my children. I thank the donors for all their kindness. I feel fortunate to be among the women who were chosen to participate in this project"

What We Are Planning For 2016

  • Build a bigger chicken coop with several compartments. This way the women dont have to wait until they have sold all the chickens inorder for them to purchace the next batch. They will place the new chicks in one compartment and put the older chickens in another compartment.
  • Raise egg laying chickens as well

As you can see from the attached pictures and from what the women had to say, you are playing a major role in tranforming their lives.

Thank you so much for all your support!!!

Happy New Year!

Best wishes,

Thelma
