Thank You for Supporting Science and Robotics Workshops for Children in South Africa!

Camesha

Thank you very much for your contribution to support science and robotics workshops for disadvantaged children, run by ORT SA CAPE, in South Africa. We received most of the funds for this project during GlobalGiving UK's Little by Little Campaign. This was the second crowdfunding challenge CHW has ever participated in and we are so grateful that you made this a success! Your support was just amazing for the children.

The first sponsored workshop has now taken place. ORT SA CAPE ran the workshop for the children from Rooikappie Pre-School Centre. CHW had already been working with them (via another Cape Town organisation, The Future Factory) and we were delighted to link ORT SA CAPE with Rooikappie. Debbie, from ORT SA CAPE, sent news and photos from this workshop.

The children, aged five and six, attended the workshop at ORT SA CAPE, based at the Cape Town Science Centre. A highlight for one of the girls, Camesha, was building a robot crocodile. She proudly showed how her robot could be programmed to open and close its mouth!

The mobile app, Elbi, also ran a project in time for this workshop. People participated from the UK and the USA and drew LEGO characters for the children. Toufeeq received a Christmas Elf! He enjoyed drawing his own picture too.

The impact of the workshop was shown in a comment left on our Facebook page, by the mother of one boy, Lance. After thanking Rooikappie's Principal, Faranaaz, she went on to say: "Thanks to everyone who gave our kids the opportunity to visit the Science Centre. My son, Lance, could not speak enough about his experience. Even said he will be working there one day. As a mom, I appreciate all you do for our kids." ORT SA CAPE replied to this comment and has offered Lance another chance to do robotics.

These children may not have many chances to go on outings like this, and this was such a wonderful experience for them - and a great introduction to science and technology.

Further workshops are planned for next month and during the school holidays, throughout 2016. There is an option to make a donation in someone's name on the project page, and this could make a nice gift over the holiday season, whilst enabling more children to have the great experience that Camesha, Toufeeq and Lance had.

We are so grateful to each of you, who helped to make this all possible. Thank you for supporting the wonderful work of ORT SA CAPE and for making a difference for disadvantaged children in Cape Town.

Your support for these children in Romania is amazing!

Gabriela

Your wonderful support during GlobalGiving UK's fundraising challenge, that Children's Helpers Worldwide (CHW) took part in in June and July, has been keeping Refugiu's tutoring and mentoring scheme going in Romania! The 19 children and teenagers who are part of this programme, live in poverty and most of them have only one living parent. They have faced a lot of difficulties in their lives already. Your help means they are getting some much-needed extra support, through Refugiu's programmes.

Robert, the Head of Refugiu, has sent some updates on how the children are doing. Gabriela, aged 9, has had a great report from her teacher! She had not been enrolled in school last year, but she attended the tutoring sessions regularly. She is now in first grade and her teacher said she is surprised at how much knowledge Gabriela has, seeing that she had not been to preschool or kindergarten. This is a direct result of great tutoring Gabriela has received through Refugiu's programme. Thank you to each and every supporter who has made this possible!

The children were able to have new school supplies and clothes at the beginning of the term. Robert gave the following news: " Shopping bought much joy to the children. They were very happy because they had no hope for new clothes, shoes, bags and some supplies… Even the journey to Brasov [the nearest city] was so joyful… Romi and Remus [two siblings] felt so special that they had received new clothes… The widow with three children [another family helped by Refugiu] told me they would not have had any chance to buy something for school. She was praying for help. I was very happy that WE can help them.”

Thank you for supporting Refugiu's programmes and for making it possible for these very disadvantaged children and teenagers to have this extra help. Your kindness and generosity is helping them with their education and this is giving them the chance of a brighter future. Thank you.

Your Help has Kept the Tutoring Scheme Going!

Delia

Thank you for being part of the first fundraising challenge Children's Helpers Worldwide (CHW) has ever participated in! Your generosity has ensured that Refugiu's tutoring and mentoring programme, for 19 disadvantaged Roma children and teenagers in Tarlungeni, Romania, can continue for the next couple of years. Your support also meant that CHW was given a place on GlobalGiving UK's website, which is an excellent fundraising platform. We are truly grateful for your kindness.

The tutoring sessions have continued over the summer and the children are making good progress. Robert, the social worker who coordinates this scheme sent some pictures and updates. The attached photo is of Delia, 3, the youngest child, showing off her colouring! Being able to use pencils and crayons will give her a head start, when she goes to school in the future. Her older brother, Florin, 9, is one of the hardest-working children at the tutoring programme. The attached photo shows him working on improving his handwriting. The new school term starts on 14 September and Florin will be well-prepared for this, thanks to the tutoring scheme, which you have supported.

The children who attend this programme come from difficult backgrounds. They are living in poverty and fourteen, out of the nineteen children, have a parent who has passed away. By sponsoring the tutoring and mentoring programme, you are providing them with much-needed extra support and the chance for a brighter future.

If you would like to see, in more detail, how you helped CHW to complete GlobalGiving UK's crowdfunding challenge, you can click on the link to our newsletter below. If you would like to receive our newlsetters regularly, we have provided the link to our sign-up form too.

Thank you again for all your help and support. You are making a huge difference for these children.
