Encouraging Self-Motivation

Dear Friends,

The Bon Children Welfare Center staff work hard to create an environment which encourages self- motivation in the Tibetan and Nepalese youth they care for.

As the secretary of the Bon Center said, “We want to see all the children happy and above all we want them to learn through a process of self- awakening. We believe that self- awakening will mean you make right decisions as you face challenges in the future. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses helps you choose the right path in life. We tell every child here that we are all unique and we are neither better nor less than anybody else but rather the best or least of ourselves.”

The care the children receive is holistic being not just academic school work, but sport, spirituality and psychological support and cultural. There are many after school activities and opportunities for inter house competition as well as chances to represent the school at competitions. Recently, Bon students won prizes in a regional competition in Tibetan poetry, poetry recitation, debate, science, and music. Through this sort of experience the youth learn self- motivation, self- confidence and to express their opinions.

Thank you for your support for Tibetan Bon youth.

New Scholarships for the New School Year

Dear Friends,

The new school year in Afghanistan began in April and scholarships are being awarded to young girls and boys eager to continue their education. We are grateful for the support we have received for our projects funding scholarships for K-12 students.  We are proud to report that microprojects  have raised enough money to award 16 girls and 5 boys scholarships.  This general scholarship project will provide more scholarships, the number available has yet to be determined.

One of the premium classes at the private school is the Leadership Class for top students.  Every single story that students shared with AIL staff this month included a positive review of this class.  Our scholarship students have the opportunity to try out for this special year long class. The class explores all aspects of leadership and includes work projects in the community such as a recent clean up effort as well as field trips.

One of the scholarship recipients shared this story: “My name is Hares and I am so delighted to have been given the scholarship.  This is a great thing that the school does to help most of the students dealing with financial problems.  While some schools just try to increase the number of students, the Yacoobi Private Schools are giving scholarships to help promote the knowledge of its current students.  There is also a leadership class that is free for top students and I am one of the participants.  Leadership, management, and peace are the subjects taught.  I learned how to be a good leader because I attended that class.”

Your help means even more children can have the opportunity to continue their education and work towards a better future.  Thank you so much for your continued support of our efforts to give young Afghans access to high quality education.

Radio Meraj Wins National Award

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to let you know that Radio Meraj, the private radio station set up by Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, has won a national award from NAI – Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan (an Afghan NGO).

Radio Meraj, which has only been operational for one year, was recognized as being a top media outlet winning the Best Guest Speaker category for the whole country! 60 media outlets submitted applications and only 7 were given awards. Radio Meraj is one of the best news channels in Afghanistan and is recognized by the people of Herat as a valued conveyer of news and education.

Radio Meraj is  important and gives rural poor Afghans a voice.  The station produces and publishes many local reports and was recognized for enhancing those reports with the best reporters and subject experts in the areas of social action, education, politics, democracy, rule of law, and human rights.  One of Radio Meraj’s goals is to educate the people of Herat so that they can learn how to improve their lives and have knowledge of events outside of their villages and cities.

Dr. Sakena Yacoobi said, during the opening ceremony for the station last year that, “This radio station is not political, but rather it works to improve morality, humanity and the characteristics and behavior of people. Moreover, it strives to work with Afghan youth in order to bring positive changes in their lives.”  Dr. Yacoobi’s senior advisor, Mr. Bahra, followed up by saying, “Education is the first step for development, and media is the best tool for carrying out educational goals.”

Congratulations Radio Meraj and thank you for your continued support of this project.
