Let's Make Friends!

Dear our Donors,

We greatly appreciate your kindness and support to our children and their families. We know how important to have a community resources for families who have children with autism spectrum disorder or social communication difficulties. Looking around us at the difference your financial support has made to our organization, we know that to be true.

The ability to play with other children can take a long time to develop and requires patience, persistence, and new toys, tools, and Social Skills Library that includes visual helpers such as social skills cards, posters, and albums. Your financial support helps us to organize structured and non-structured playtime, cooperative playtime, playing and learning time together, playtime with a partner by using favorite toys, tools, books, and sensory materials.

A successful social skills playtime is our valuable goal. David's mother shared that David has trouble understanding and talking and difficulties to follow one step directions. We understand mother's worries because all these components are very important for nice social skills activities. Teaching parents to use Hanen strategies during social skills playtime is our way to help children to choose the right toys and activities, to find the right friends, and to help children with sharing the toys. Teaching children how to play and what to say is our main step during cooperative play. For example, Jake wants to join in but does not know how. Using right toys, tools, and strategies is helping our children to make friends at different stages of communication.

Again and again we would like to send to all our supporters our special Thank You! Thank you for the new books, games, cards and shelves that our children can use during their social skills activities.

The students in our Penndco Literacy Master Map Program benefit from the support of both volunteers and their dedicated parents’ enthusiasm along with the expertise of their instructor. Our weekly lessons are enthusiastic and meaningful.

Each holiday has been an opportunity to spell and illustrate in order to improve penmanship while practicing phonics and gathering new vocabulary. Our winter holiday wreath was festooned with the names of our most precious gifts: our students. And, for Valentine’s Day the sweetest treats were new words.

Each student has a literary journal in which new words are illustrated. It’s so wonderful to watch them turn the pages of their personal book and read their own words illustrated by their own drawings.

The most important way to advance a skill is to practice it. Our students practice reading aloud and gain confidence in how to embrace new vocabulary rather than shun it.

Our students feel supported and safe in our friendly, well-organized and managed space. At last, they now feel completely willing to ask Ms. Claire, their teacher, “How to spell” something. The reticence of Autumn is gone. They bravely ask questions. They know that they won’t be shamed. They know that their teacher understands that they’re brilliant and determined. They are hungry to learn. Their teacher is honored to serve them. How rewarding when a student says, “Help me, please.”

On a personal note, their reading specialist, Claire Green, says that she looks forward to her weekly gathering with our Penndco Literacy Master Map Program readers. They are each dear to her and she constantly says how impressed she is with each one of them and their remarkable families.

Every Sensory Experience Counts!

Dear our Donors,

We appreciate your generocity, and we would like to say you Thank You again and again. Children with autism spectrum disorder or social communication difficulties can experience the world quite differently than others.  For example, a typical child may enjoy the flashy lights and sounds of an amusement park. Going to the local carnival on a warm spring night and spending the night riding amusements, enjoying carnival games, cotton candy, loud music and experiencing the overall excitement that comes with a carnival is a great childhood experience. That carnival was a multi-sensory experience.  Now a take a child with autism spectrum disorder and that childhood may experience the same carnival in completely different way. The experience can be quite overwhelming resulting in fear, agitation or even seizures. The point being children need to be stimulated in order to learn yet also feel calm, safe and relaxed.  

A sensory room has special lighting, calm music, bubbles, various tactile toys and furniture to stimulate the mind. The experience relaxes the child and yet allows the child to have a multi-sensory experience, much like the child who went to the carnival.  The sensory room is created with two goals in mind: to promote intellectual activity and relaxation.

Penndco children deserve an environment that is conducive to learning.  While the traditional classroom may benefit one child, another child may benefit from a sensory room where varying lights and textures gently stimulate the brain allowing the child to reenter the traditional classroom, relaxed and ready to learn.

Recent statistics in Pennsylvania show that 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. With statistics this staggering the need for innovative therapies to bring about the best outcomes is dire.
