Reading Opens The Door!

Reading is Fun!
Reading is Fun!

We would like to thank our sponsors for giving us the opportunity to host the Literacy Master Map Program. The beginning of the program was a huge success. Reading opens the door to many new opportunities that our kids could take advantage of. During this class we will be building students stamina while teaching them to handle longer texts. The course will also focus on the most important aspect of reading – comprehension. It is critical that when students are reading they are understanding what they are reading and are able to analyze the text. We will also be working on identifying themes, identifying key ideas in a text, and understanding the structure of a text. All these elements of reading are critical in developing student’s ability to handle texts independently. The class will  also focus on various skills connected to writing. Students will learn how to  structure their writing as well as have exposure to a variety of different types of writing.

I asked our students what type of books they like, and Alex told me he is interested in books that tell stories about pirates and treasure; Kristina prefers to read about princess. We will gage student interest to use this information to better build instruction to suit the needs of our students. This will ensure that our kids are life-long readers and more importantly, life-long learners.

Messy-Sensory Play is Fun!

Messy-sensory activities!
Messy-sensory activities!

Dear our Donors,

We would like to send you our Special Thank You for your generosity and kindness. You have supported our program, and children and their parents appreciate your help.

Creating a Sensory Area is our new goal, and we know how messy-sensory play is important for our children with autism spectrum disorder. This playtime is essential for child's brain and early learning. As therapists we know that sensory play helps child to develop and improve fine-motor skills, eye-hand coordination, concentration, and adaptive skills. During messy-sensory play such as kinetic play activity, water games, playdough activity, water beads activity, and glue collages our children have a chance to develop their experience in cooperative play and pretend play. It is a valuable experience to use all senses to discover and explore surroundings. Messy-sensory game is fun, and relaxed activity.

Penndco Board of Directors, volunteers, parents and donors support our project. We are happy to create our new sensory station for children.

Thank you so much for all ideas and help.

Sincerely,

Tetyana Varenychenko, M.Ed.

Deepest Thanks!

We are ready for Summer Time!
We are ready for Summer Time!

Dear Donors,

We would like to inform you that our Literacy Master Map Program 2017-2018 successfully finished, and our students have a summer break. Many thanks to all our Donors, Supporters, Volunteers, Teachers, Families, and Administrators who have made this project possible. We hope to continue to get your supports for reaching our educational goals.

Penndo's Families appreciate your generosity to help their children to increase reading skills. We would like to share with you that we had an interesting experience to allow our students to draw as teacher read a book. All students were especially attentive and creative in this modality. Reading specialist Mrs. Claire reported: " It is really interesting to see what students choose to draw. The boys tend to draw robots, military, cars, or sports items. The girls on the other hand tend to draw flowers, princess, dolls, or realistic situations."  Now we are sure that drawing is not a substitute for reading, but can take the pressure off those children who read poorly but use aural and verbal stimulation to better code and decode words. We encourage our bilingual readers to participate in reading and art activities during our program.

Again and again our deepest thanks go to All Donors and Helpers who understands how important to help little boys and girls to be good readers.

Sincerely,

Tetyana Varenychenko, M.Ed.
