Constructing our way for new journey

New school block
New school block

Dear Friends,

Team Adharshila takes immense pleasure in sharing the glimpse of its new building of the school block. In 2014 we embarked on a process of planned expansion so that the benefits of our unique and successful intervention can be extended to a much larger number of students in the target community. A major requirement for the expansion was to expand the infrastructure of the Adharshila Middle and High School. Over next two years we plan to double the intake of students at middle school coming from the Satellite Resource Centers (SRCs). Earlier we worked on expanding our horizontal coverage via SRCs. They provided us inroads to expand the number of beneficiaries.

We also plan to shift the pedagogy. We plan to evolve a more engaging pedagogy that marks a shift from grade based classrooms to theme based. We required 6 halls with a seating capacity for 45-50 students each in an activity based learning mode. At the same time we also wanted the new infrastructure to reflect the overall philosophy and design sensibility of the organization, so that it reinforces our core vision of sustainability and social justice. Therefore we spent significant amount of effort in the planning and design phase before embarking on the physical construction of the new school block. The new block with subject wise activity rooms will be an exciting new way for the students to explore various subjects in their own unique way.

We ensure our pedagogy does not get restricted to area within four walls and hence we strive to include ways that make learning a fun filled experience. One such addition was a telescope. With a good 8” telescope in our repertory we leave no chance to observe any celestial event visible in our area. Last time we gathered to see the full moon or the blue moon. This time on the 31st of Jan around 100 children gathered in the dusk to observe the total lunar eclipse or the ‘Blood Moon. Such activities keep the students as well as teachers hooked to new possibilities of learning.

We hope you enjoyed reading about our new activities. We look forward to your feedbacks on our initiative. Please spread the word about us and strengthen it with your continued support.

Thank you!

Celebrating access and success

cycling our way to learning
cycling our way to learning

Dear Friends,

Adharshila team wishes you a happy and prosperous new year. End of every year is a time of celebrations, we bid good bye to the graduating students and welcome the new year batch with fresh resolutions and plans. We believe the best way to carry out this celebration is by empowering our students with means of accessing education without any hindrance. These hurdles especially in case of girls can deter their educational attainment. One such hurdle is of commuting miles to attend the school. Distance between school and student has always been a critical factor, which made us take the Satellite Resource Centers (SRCs) to villages. However, after successful completion of primary schooling, students, especially girls, whose villages are located far from Adharshila Middle and High School (AMHS) face difficulty in continuing their middle schooling. The core of this problem is the concerns of parents about the safety of their girls and at times moral obligations, which throws light on still a part of society which is apprehensive about women education. But the fact that such problems are shaping up, they demand for a solution too and making way for a new society where girls can freely move up the ladder of schooling. Further, we received similar concerns from male students as well. In this light, our task was to sort this issue in the best possible way we could. With the generous support and well wishes of our friends, last year we decided to distribute bi-cycles to these girls and boys for independent and safe commuting. After the success reported in attendance and academic performance post the first round of distribution in 2016, we decided to continue with the endeavor this year as well and bought bi-cycles for 30 students in the second round.

Rajkumari, a class 6th student who comes to AMHS from a village 6 kilometers away says “I manage to come to Adharshila everyday boarding the only bus that passes near my village in the morning, but as there is no bus that goes to my village when the school hours end, I do not attend the second half of the school to be able to reach home on time. Now, after getting my own bicycle, I will be able to attend all the classes without having to worry about reaching home late.”

Rachna, a class 10th student who comes from a village at a distance of 7 kilometer said, “Because I was not able to attend school regularly due to the distance I had to travel to reach Adharshila, I was lagging behind in the class. Since this year I have to give board exams and my parents cannot afford me tuitions at home, I need to attend the school regularly. With having my own bicycle, I will be able to attend all classes now and try to cover up my syllabus”.

Further, we are delighted to share with you the glimpses of our Annual Cultural Event. The most awaited event, which not just brings together students of AMHS and SRCs but also ex-students, parents and villagers was organized on 14th November 2017 (Children’s day). All of them contributed in their own capacity to make the evening a memorable one. This year nearly 500 students participated in the event, majority of them were from SRCs. The large audience which came from 30 nearby villages stayed with us till the end and applauded students for their beautiful performances.

We always try to make things better for students attending Adharshila. The firm belief and generous contribution from you helps us to strengthen our initiative. Thank you for being a part of our journey.  Do consider sharing about this initiative in your circle. We’ll be delighted to receive your comments and suggestions on our work.

Student progression through child-centric pedagogy

Copies of the Competency Schedule
Copies of the Competency Schedule

Satellite Resource Centers (SRCs) has been a successful channel to expand the outreach amongst Sahariya Adivasi school goers. Catering to Adivasi school goers through SRCs has improved the coverage and learning outcomes amongst the community. Taking teachers to the hamlets made it easier for pupils to attend school and also it paved the way for a closer interaction between the beneficiaries and the teachers. The rising number of enrollment at SRCs and the students’ progression from SRCs to Adharshila Middle and High School (AMHS) has been an indicator of the success of this initiative. Over the last three years the student progression has increased and a total of 71 Sahariya school goers have progressed to AMHS.

Catering to rising number of students at SRCs and ensuring quality learning required making the teaching learning process student-centric. Thus we began the process of curriculum development for the SRCs by conducting various workshops, trainings, educational visits, and kept on incorporating our learning in everyday classroom to understand their effects with our peculiar context.

The journey achieved a milestone in August, 2017 when the curriculum was evolved into a book called ‘The Competency Schedules’, made entirely by the teachers of our SRCs, with facilitation from the Teacher Educator and the Secretary. The book has a list of competencies that we understood as essential for primary level students in Hindi, English, and Mathematics. It also details the need of each and every competency, suggested pedagogy and assessment technique, along with required teaching aids. In addition, wherever required, competencies are organized for students of different learning levels, in order to cater to our multigrade classrooms. Teachers have already started working with the competency schedule. In the month of October, 2017, a review workshop was also held with the Teacher Educator to reflect on the challenges and achievements teachers have gone through till now.

We strive to provide quality learning atmosphere to our students by evolving teaching practices centered on the students. Your support and encouragement is a prerequisite to continue this practice. We’d love to have your suggestions and reflections on our work. This would help us in strengthening our initiative. We hope that you’ll continue to be a part of our journey.

Thank you,

Warmly
