Caozhuang Elementary School Renovation

Dear Donors,

Hope you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather.

This time we would like to introduce to you Caozhuang Elemenatary School. Caozhuang, located in Guanyun County, Jiangsu Province, is a school of 305 students and 15 teachers and administrators. The students at Caozhuang come from various rural parts of the Guanyun County. The majority of them are children left behind by parents who went to cities for work opportunities. At least a third of them are orphans, from single-parent families, or from families with income far below the poverty line. For these children, Caozhuang Elementary School is the only education resource available. Unfortunately, often what is available is not adequate.

Originally built in the 1970’s, Caozhuang had been expanded and revamped only a few times. Over the years, some of the buildings had become very dilapidated. In two of the oldest buildings, hardly any of the classroom doors and windows are free of damage and distortion. During spring and summer, bug and mosquito come in through the leaky doors and windows, and during fall and winter, cold draft. It pained us to see children learning and studying in such an environment, so we decided to help.

Last month, 20 aluminum alloy windows and 23 stainless steel doors replaced the old broken ones at Caozhuang. The renovation project costed a total of 33,514 RMB (~$5000), which all came from your support. Now, when the children spend their days in classrooms, they do not have to endure temperature swings, mosquito bites, or any other problems due to the poor environment before. A better physical setting for more effective education was made possible by your help. Everyone at Caozhuang is grateful for what you did. We cannot thank you enough.

Sincerely,

OCEF

New Water Supply System for Nanfeng Elementary School

Dear Donors,

Hope you are enjoying your summer!

Great news from Nanfeng Elementary School: a water supply system is installed!

Located in the remote mountains of Lintao County, Dingxi, Gansu Province, Nanfeng Elementary School has been an educational resource for children from nearby villages since 1933. Currently, Nanfeng has 37 students and 4 teachers. Despite its small size, the school has well structured classes and offers its students a number of extracurricular activities. Indeed, from what we see during our visits, the school has a lively and creative spirit. Students are self-motivated to learn and teachers are passionate about improving students' learning.

Regrettably, Nanfeng Elementary School's facilities are run-down. All classrooms and faculty dormitories were built around 2000 and severely damaged by the earthquake in 2015. The school is in the process of planning to demolish and rebuild with government assistance, which is now still pending.

Even more problematic than the dilapidated buildings is the lack of water supply system at the school. During the last decade, the groundwater level in Lintao County has been constantly decreasing. Months ago, the spring on which students and teachers at Nanfeng relied dried up. Since then, the school has been getting water from other areas using a car, which is very inconvenient. Fortunately, this condition did not persist. Thanks to you, in April, a brand new water supply system was built and put in use.

The water supply system costed a total of 50,000RMB, out of which 10,000RMB came from you. Your help has made the lives of people at Nanfeng so much easier and happier. Please see the pictures attached and accept our heartfelt gratitude for your kindness and support.

Sincerely,

OCEF

Spring Greetings! New Printers for Dingtao Schools

Dear Donors,

Happy Spring!

This time we would like to introduce to you two new elementary schools, Chengzhuang and Huhai. Located in Dingtao, Shandong Province, both schools have been receiving donations from OCEF for a few years, mainly as participants in our library and reading programs. In the past month, we learned that the two schools had problems producing teaching materials and processing official documents because they lack printer, scanner, and copy machine. Therefore, we took a small amount of your donations and bought them what they needed. Although the new equipment seemed to be a small addition, they greatly improved the quality and efficiency of classroom teaching. The teachers and students are all very grateful for your help.

Chengzhuang has about three hundred students and Huhai about four hundred. The students come from six nearby villages where the per capita income barely touches 3,000 RMB per year. In order to better support their families, more than 90% of these students’ parents went to bigger cities to seek work opportunities. With parents absent from their lives, the children learned at a very early age how to take care of themselves. During every visit, we saw their effort to learn and grow and we wished we had done more for them. As a brand new spring comes around, with your incredible help, we will continue to strive to improve education and well-being of the children.

Thank you for all your kindness and support.

Sincerely,

OCEF
