Happy Spring!

Dear Donors,

Happy Spring!

This time we would like to share with you the story of Ms. Feng. Ms. Feng is a teacher at Gaowan Elementary School in Haiyuan County, Ningxia Province. She has been teaching at Gaowan since March, 2011. Throughout these six years, her remarkable knowledge of the subject matter, engaging teaching style, outstanding classroom management skills, and strong rapport with students have earned her the respect and trust of everyone around her. However, unbeknown to her students, outside the classroom Ms. Feng’s own life is full of difficulties. In 2014, Ms. Feng’s father passed away, leaving her as the only breadwinner in the family. With barely over $100 a month, Ms. Feng has to support two younger siblings, who are in middle and high schools, and her grandfather, who is in his eighties and often needs extensive medical care. Even Ms. Feng herself admitted once that if it were not for her passion for education and love for her students, she would have stopped teaching at Gaowan.

Ms. Feng’s colleagues, after knowing her living conditions, reached out to OCEF. As an organization that supports education in rural China, we feel that we can and should help Ms. Feng. Starting from Spring 2017, Ms. Feng will participate in our Teacher Aid Program. We hope that by providing regular financial assistance to Ms. Feng, we can make her life easier and allow her to stay longer with her students at Gaowan.

In rural China, due to poverty and desolation, many schools like Gaowan are unable to offer fair wages and employee benefits and, as a result, have great difficulty hiring enough professionally trained teachers. These schools then have to rely on teachers like Ms. Feng, who are willing to work with 1/10 to 1/20 of the regular teacher salary. OCEF's Teacher Aid Program, established in 2006, aims to help these teachers. We provide both financial assistance and additional professional training to those who experience financial hardship but remain committed to teaching educationally deprived children in rural areas. In this way, we can help keep good teachers available for the students. As of now, OCEF has helped more than 700 teachers like Ms. Feng. We could not have done this without your help.

Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness.

Sincerely,

OCEF

New Year Greetings from OCEF

Dear Donors,

We hope you are enjoying a wonderful holiday season!

Another year has come, and we would like to take this time to express our deep gratitude for your generous support over the past year. Most notably, on November 29th, in the MatchAMillion fundraising event, you helped us raise $36,485 and win $17,150 of matching funds from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These donations will be able to help a great number of students to continue their education or study in a better environment, given that currently $100, $150, $350 can support an elementary, middle, high school student for an entire school year, respectively.

Also in last month, we finished distributing school uniforms for the students at Donggang Elementary School. Donggang Elementary School, located in Donggang Village, Hunan Province, has a total of 282 students, plus 58 children in its affiliated kindergarten, and 15 teachers. The students come from seven nearby villages, with about 80% of them living with their grandparents, for their parents had left home and went somewhere else for work. Over the years, Donggang’s administrators had made various efforts to improve school facilities but had always been struggling to pull together enough funds to cover the costs. In 2011, in order to build an acceptable kitchen and cafeteria for the students and teachers, the school went into debt. That was when OCEF started to work with the school and, since then, the school’s administrators and OCEF volunteers have worked together in several projects, including setting up new dining tables, new kitchen equipment, new classroom desk and chair sets, and expanding the school library. This time, $2,900 of your donations plus $400 from Xi Liang Chuan Foundation went to Donggang and gave all of its students new clothes to wear in the new year.

Without you, none of these would have been possible. Thank you for your kindness through all this time.

We wish you great happiness and prosperity in 2017. Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Overseas China Education Foundation

Caozhuang Elementary School Renovation

Dear Donors,

Hope you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather.

This time we would like to introduce to you Caozhuang Elemenatary School. Caozhuang, located in Guanyun County, Jiangsu Province, is a school of 305 students and 15 teachers and administrators. The students at Caozhuang come from various rural parts of the Guanyun County. The majority of them are children left behind by parents who went to cities for work opportunities. At least a third of them are orphans, from single-parent families, or from families with income far below the poverty line. For these children, Caozhuang Elementary School is the only education resource available. Unfortunately, often what is available is not adequate.

Originally built in the 1970’s, Caozhuang had been expanded and revamped only a few times. Over the years, some of the buildings had become very dilapidated. In two of the oldest buildings, hardly any of the classroom doors and windows are free of damage and distortion. During spring and summer, bug and mosquito come in through the leaky doors and windows, and during fall and winter, cold draft. It pained us to see children learning and studying in such an environment, so we decided to help.

Last month, 20 aluminum alloy windows and 23 stainless steel doors replaced the old broken ones at Caozhuang. The renovation project costed a total of 33,514 RMB (~$5000), which all came from your support. Now, when the children spend their days in classrooms, they do not have to endure temperature swings, mosquito bites, or any other problems due to the poor environment before. A better physical setting for more effective education was made possible by your help. Everyone at Caozhuang is grateful for what you did. We cannot thank you enough.

Sincerely,

OCEF
