We are coming to the end of the school year at the two schools, Mzamomhle Primary and St Mary’s Primary, supported by the Help more South African children achieve in Maths project. Both these schools have shown full commitment to this project. The schools have completed 82% of their online Maths exercises as well as all of their assessments for the year. Roughly 150 different exercises were completed in 2016.

We asked a couple of teachers what they thought the biggest impact of this project on their learners were. The teachers responded by saying that this project has had a positive impact on their learners’ confidence in their Maths abilities as well as their interest in Maths.

“The fact that the learners could do their work with more confidence and pride. This sense of accomplishment and perseverance is transferred to their other learning areas where it has a positive impact. Many leaners who didn’t really like Maths in the beginning can now proudly say I love Maths.” – Grade 5 teacher, St Mary’s Primary

“Their confidence in their ability to do Maths has shot through the roof.” – Grade 6 teacher, Mzamomhle Primary

Teachers also said that learners are taking greater ownership, they are excited about their work and they are eager to learn.

“They are eager and enthusiastic and they are definitely trying their best to get to answers. They enjoy seeing problems in a different way and are able to problem solve.”

“The learners could do their own work and see the results and the pace they would work at and feel proud about themselves for all the correct answers. It boosts their confidence level.” – Grade 5 Teacher, Mzamomhle Primary

Thank you for your donations, it is truly making a difference in every single one of the 1, 341 learners’ lives. Your donations are stepping stones to helping them achieve their dreams.

The power of online Maths exercises & assessments

We are approaching the last term of the 2016 South African school year and our two schools, Mzamomhle Primary and St Mary’s Primary, that are supported by the project “Help more South African children achieve in Maths” are hard at work. These schools have completed 82% of their weekly online Maths exercises and 100% of the classes completed their Mid-year assessments, an excellent achievement, well done!

We are passionate in our goal of using ICT to make a measurable difference to Maths in schools. We are using our online Curriculum to track every single learner through every question that they complete. Through this Project, learners are able to do two Maths lesson a week online and two termly assessments.

We asked learner at the two Project schools why they love doing their Maths exercises and assessments online rather than in their books and here is what they said:

"The Green Shoots online maths programme is very logical and exciting. I enjoy working with school work online because it is smart and is even better than writing with pen and paper. It teaches me a lot and is very helpful because it corrects your mistakes when you submit your test." – Mohammed, grade 7

Doing their Maths exercises and assessments online gives learners access to instant feedback, which very importantly means learners can immediately understand the mistakes they have made and correct them.

"The Green Shoots Online maths programme is easier than working in a book. I like it because it’s fun, they answer you immediately and shows your corrections. It gives you more information. We all love doing it and please continue to give us more challenges." – Josiane, grade 7

Thanks to your generous donations, this project "Help more South African children achieve in Maths” is able to provide learners like Mohammed and Josaine with a tool to help them to not only excel in Maths but ultimately allow them an opportunity to make their biggest dreams come true.

How data helps teachers

Teacher assisting learner

We are reaching the half-year mark at our schools supported by the project “Help more South African children achieve in Maths” and both schools are currently busy completing their online half-year Maths assessments. Both schools, Mzamomhle Primary and St Marys Primary have fervently completed their twice weekly exercises, combined the two schools have completed 82% of their weekly exercises.

One of the ways we support these schools is by providing them with data that will enable teachers to support their learners to excel in Maths. We send teachers reports that indicate how their classes have been using the Online Maths Programme twice a term, as well as summarised per child, per question, per class data of the assessments they complete.

Teachers have given positive feedback on how this data has helped them in the class room. One of the major benefits of receiving such data is that teachers are able to identify the areas with which their learners are struggling in and intervene.

“The data has resulted in me changing the way I identify learners who are having difficulty. This has influenced the intervention programme in my class.” Grade 5 teacher at St Mary’s Primary

“The data was very helpful to me because I could see the different levels where the learners were at. I could plan the interventions accordingly.” Grade 6 teacher at Mzamomhle Primary

Thanks to your donations we are able to provide teachers with the data that empowers them to make a difference in their learners Maths results and ultimately in their futures.
