I have been wondering how you have all been during these unprecedented times. I am aware that the current pandemic has affected all our lives. It is a pleasant surprise to observe that, in spite of the difficulties that come with the Covid-19 pandemic, you continue to support the girls in Lesotho. In fact, a few of you donated for the first time during the last two to three months of the pandemic, demonstrating how thoughtful your generosity truly is.
In my last report, I gave you an update on how the girls were doing and how your kind support continues to make a huge difference to their lives and those of their families. I reported that, despite the difficulties resulting from a year of teachers‘ strikes, most of the girls had managed to pass their exams and either finish high school or proceed to the next class. Covid-19 has added another layer of difficulty for the girls and their families. Because of the lockdown, parents or guardians have been off work, and some may not have jobs to return to when the lockdown is lifted. Schools have been closed and there is currently no clarity as to when they will properly reopen or whether or not end-of-year exams will take place. In spite of all this, schools still require the fees to be paid. The same applies to exam fees.
Because the girls are not at school, we are not able to obtain feedback from them directly, but our partner organisation in Lesotho reports that current events will present a number of problems. We anticipate that 2021 will be another difficult year for our cohort of girls and their families, and we need to plan ahead to increase the level of support, should this be necessary. The good news is that thanks to your generous donations, we are optimistic that we will be able to meet this extra funding requirement for at least one year. We couldn’t do it without you.
We truly appreciate your commitment to the girls we are jointly supporting. We can never thank you enough.

Thank you so much for rekindling the fire in us
By Liphethiso Monica Harris - Project Leader
I have just returned from a visit to Lesotho. My visit provided an opportunity to visit two of the schools that have girls supported by you and Educare Fund. I can still visualise the smiles on these girls’ faces! They were really happy to express their gratitude to you for changing their lives and giving them hope for a bright future. I can confirm that talking to them reassured me that your donations will not be wasted; these girls have the will to succeed.
2019 was a difficult year for our cohort because of sporadic teachers’ strikes during the year. These had a significant impact on the girls’ end of year performance, especially those who were writing final exams. I am happy to confirm that most of them did very well, some even attaining passes with merit. A few girls did not manage to get all the grades required for their chosen university courses, but they were able to resit the relevant exams. Hopefully they will achieve the required grades.
Every year, thanks to your support, Educare Fund ensures that the annual cohort of 40 girls remains in school, without the threat of being laid off due to non-payment of fees. In their feedback letters, the girls express their heartfelt gratitude for your kind generosity. Here are a few extracts from their letters:
I hereby express my appreciation and gratitude for the support that you gave me. Thanks to you I finished high school in 2019, passing the LGCSE exams with good grades. For that I will be forever grateful to you. I am now determined to pursue my dream of becoming a medical doctor and your kind support makes me feel I am getting closer to achieving it.
The scholarship has changed my life. Thanks to you, my performance at school has improved by leaps and bounds because I am now able to concentrate on my studies and no longer tress about unpaid school fees.
And Mahlape wrote:
Thank you so much for kindling the fire in us, letting us know you that you have our backs and that with hard work we can make it in life in spite of our disadvantaged backgrounds.
I hope you feel proud to be part of these girls’ journeys to a bright future. We at Educare Fund know for sure that we couldn’t do this important job without your ongoing generous support.

Thank you for another successful year
By Liphethiso Monica Harris - Project Leader
Hard to believe, but we are now approaching the end of 2019. It gives me great pleasure to have this opportunity to thank you all for teaming up with Educare Fund through the years and in all the campaigns during 2019. This is also a good time to thank you for your support in this year’s GlobalGiving’s #GivingTuesday on the 3rd December as well as the foundation’s Year-end Campaign which runs until the 31st.
Thanks to your generous gifts, 10 more girls successfully finished high school at the end of the 2019 school year. 8 more girls will reach their final high school year, finishing at the end of 2020. Every year, thanks to your support, Educare Fund succeeds in ensuring that the annual cohort of 40 girls remains in school, without the threat of being laid off due to unpaid school fees. Many girls continually bear testimony to the impact that your generosity has on their young lives.
Thank you for the scholarship which has opened the door to a brighter future for me. I am especially grateful for your support because I was at risk of not being able to write my final high school exams due to lack of funds. My parents were not able to raise the money to pay for the exam fees. Thanks to you, I have now written my exams and am confident I can achieve my dreams. Donors like you make life brighter for us and I can only hope that one day I too will be in a position to bring a smile to a needy student’s face.
And Lineo says:
I am writing to thank you for the scholarship I am receiving from Educare Fund which has enabled me to remain in school one more year. Thanks to you, my parents’ financial burden is also lighter, with the school fees paid. I’m aware that I am very lucky to have this scholarship as I know there are thousands of other students who also need support.
I am happy to echo the sentiments expressed above. Needless to say, we couldn’t do this important job without your ongoing support.
I wish you all a Happy Festive Season and I hope that 2020 brings you peace, joy, and success.
