Christel House Grad Receives Full Scholarship to Arizona State University

Thank you for your continued support of Christel House South Africa!  Your generosity helps us develop goal-oriented, successful students prepared for the challenges of higher education and the 21st Century workplace.

We are excited to introduce Cimone Maasdorp, a 2010 graduate of Christel House South Africa, who was recently awarded a full scholarship and will begin her studies in tourism at Arizona State University this fall.

“This opportunity means the world to me and my family!” she beams.  “I am passionate about tourism and travel and will make this scholarship count these next four years as an ASU “wildcat.”

Cimone’s interest in tourism reflects her deep desire to make a significant contribution to her community, which sadly  is plagued by  overwhelming poverty, violence and unemployment.   “Attending ASU on scholarship will equip me with the skills I can use to help create jobs and other positive opportunities for my people,” she continues.  “I want to bring hope to my community.”

She is thankful for her family’s unyielding belief in her abilities and credits Christel House with teaching her to expect the most of herself.   “I have been blessed with the great support of my parents and grandparents,” she says.  “I am grateful to Christel House for showing me I can reach my dreams by setting aggressive goals, working diligently, and persevering through challenges.”

Christel House donors like you help students, like Cimone, achieve their dreams.  THANK YOU!

Join us in wishing her all the best!

Cinderella Story at Christel House India

Jennifer and her art project
Jennifer and her art project

Thank you for your continued support of Christel House India! By supporting our efforts, you are providing girls the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and make a difference in their communities. Our holistic approach assures not only a top notch education, but nutrition, medical, and mental health for all our students.

Meet Jennifer, a second grade student at Christel House India. Her father deserted them many years ago and her mother, who used to work as a housemaid, is ill and now unable to work. Jennifer and her little sister seldom have enough food to eat at home.  When it rains their house leaks and they have to bail the water out as if the house were a leaky boat. They rely on the kindness of neighbors to help with their basic needs. Yet, despite all her struggles, Jennifer‘s cheerfulness is contagious.

Jennifer is a hard working student with strong leadership qualities. She loves her teacher, and begins her day by helping set up the classroom for the day.  She is very caring and often helps her classmates with their studies. Jennifer does well academically, has beautiful handwriting and reads well.   She excels in athletics and is also artistically talented.

Jennifer dreams of being a doctor when she grows up and knows that Christel House India will help her realize her dreams. In the two years that she has been attending Christel House India, Jennifer has been transformed from a subdued, timid little girl to a confident and outgoing child –truly a Cinderella story.

It’s because of people like you that girls like Jennifer are achieving their dreams. Thank you again for your continued support of Christel House!

Christel House Graduates Have a Bright Tomorrow

CHRISTEL HOUSE GRADUATES WORKING TOWARDS BRIGHTER TOMORROW

Our  Christel House South Africa students are shining brightly.  Country-wide  only 50% of black high school graduates pass the critical "matric" exam, which determines university/ vocational school admission.  But, 100% of our Christel House students passed – for two consecutive years.    Only 10% of ALL South African graduates qualify for university, yet at Christel House, 67% received scores high enough to enable continued education.  These statistics prove one thing—Christel House works!

Our Christel House kids have set lofty goals for themselves, with nearly 90% of our graduates either attending a university, or participating in an apprenticeship or work-study program.

Meet Nontando, a member of the first graduating class of Christel House South Africa in 2009.  She is now a second year student at the University of Technology in Cape Town, studying Chemical Engineering.  Christel House has given her the confidence and determination to reach her goals. “I didn’t  always have the basic needs, like breakfast. My parents couldn't afford to buy what they call luxuries. I didn’t really count on our electricity because of the kind of environment I live in with crime and robbery especially of electrical wires. I was so fortunate to have close teachers who really looked out for me since early years at Christel House.”

Nontando hopes, once she graduates and has full time employment, to work part time towards earning her Master’s Degree.  “Poverty,” she says, “is not an excuse not to excel, grow as a stable person, and actually make a difference in the lives of others. And YES, being poor is my reality now, but it’s not my destiny.”

Just like Nontando, many other Christel House graduates are working hard to reach their goals to become contributing members of society through the Career Development program.  Currently there are 41 students participating. Thank you so much for your continued support. Every donation makes an impact on our Christel House South Africa graduates. Together, we truly are breaking the cycle of poverty one student at a time.
