Test results show Christel House India advantage

Christel House India - Bangalore (CHI) high school students continue to excel in academics.  New test scores show the Christel House advantage. 98% of grade 10 students passed the state exams, beating the state pass rate by 25 percentage points.  87% of CHI 12th graders passed their graduation exams, beating the state pass rate of 60% by 27 percentage points. "Many factors are responsible for this success," says Jaison C. Mathew, CEO of Christel House India. "The passion and commitment of our teachers, the support of our donors, the hard work of the students and most importantly, the belief of our founder Christel DeHaan -- that education is the only way to break the vicious cycle of poverty. We are committed to continue to fight poverty through quality education and character development."

Planting inspiration for South African children

On the anniversary of what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday, students of Christel House South Africa along with partners from Dell EMC teamed-up to celebrate the anti-apartheid activist, political leader and President of South Africa. To honor Mandela’s memory, students were encouraged to help clean up their communities by bringing two plastic bottles to school; one to recycle and the other one in which to plant a Spekboom tree to take home. With drought issues in South Africa, the Spekboom is an eco-friendly tree – it requires very little water and is a CO2 guzzler, off-setting harmful carbon emissions. The Mandela event was a true teaching moment. Young students learned about the inspiring leader, remembered as the “Father of the Nation,” and honored his legacy by improving their neighborhoods.

Ale returns to teach at Christel House Mexico

Alejandra León will never forget her first day as a 3rd grader at Christel House Mexico (CHMX). “We were welcomed with a lot of enthusiasm – that made me feel safe and loved.” Growing up at Christel House, Ale received valuable guidance from the College & Careers program. She graduated from CHMX and entered Mexico’s CETIS high school system, earning a technical/professional degree in social work. An internship at Christel House inspired her to teach. But a financial setback put her university plans in jeopardy. A chance to work as a receptionist at CHMX saved her college dreams. She balanced work at Christel House while pursuing her university studies. “The teachers supported me at all times,” she says. Ale impressed the Christel House staff and was offered a job as a teacher’s assistant. Today she has her own class, teaching 2nd grade at Christel House. “I teach the way they taught me – with love, with professionalism and with a vision for the future of the children.”
