Programs

ColaLife is a UK charity, harnessing synergies across Public Private Partnerships and creating innovations for access to essential health products in developing countries. COTZ (ColaLife Operational Trial Zambia) is the first field test of the ColaLIife concept; an academically rigorous trial testing the creation of a new anti-diarrhoea kit for under-5s and the establishment and utilisation of an 'end-to-end value chain' to improve access to essential medicines in underserved rural communities in Zambia. COTZ has already Designed and tested an innovative Anti-Diarrhoea Kit, 'Kit Yamoyo,' for home use among children under 5 in rural/remote areas. This combines Oral Rehydration Salts, Zinc, soap for hand-washing and informational materials. The packaging not only protects the contents and makes the Kit attractive, but acts as a measuring vessel (200ml) for the newly designed 4g/200ml sachets of salt - adapted for home use. This means mothers/carers will be able to mix ORS solution more easily in the home environment. The packaging also acts as a clean cup for children to drink from and has a lid. Designed and tested the Kit's private sector value chain via micro-retailers in underserved rural areas. 30 retailers and 30 Promoters have been trained in each of the 2 districts, in the benefits of the Kit and basic knowledge about diarrhoea. In the distribution phase, just begun, COTZ will: Distribute 40,000 Kits, to up to 15,000- 20,000 women, in 2 trial districts in Zambia (Katete and Kalomo). It will also distribute 28,000 vouchers to establish demand and ensure equity, as each voucher entitles a mother/carer to a free Kit at the retailer. The retailer is paid by the project for the sale. Train, and improve livelihoods of 60+ rural micro-retailers, through selling this new product Work with and align with partners and stakeholders to maximise transfer of learning
