Mission

Our vision is a world where people collaborate from business, public and NGO sectors so children no longer die from preventable causes through lack of access to simple medicines and the knowledge of how to use them. Our Mission is to build novel partnerships and 'smart networks' to alleviate poverty and improve health in the developing world through innovation.

Programs

ColaLife is a UK charity, harnessing synergies across Public Private Partnerships and creating innovations for access to essential health products in developing countries - particularly ORS and Zinc for childhood Diarrhoea. ColaLife works by consulting with carers of children, stakeholders and convening expertise from across sectors. We generate and share robust evidence and learning on what works, working through local organisations as a catalyst. COTZ (ColaLife Operational Trial Zambia) was the first field test of the ColaLIife concept; an academically rigorous trial testing the creation of a new anti-diarrhoea kit for under-5s and the establishment and utilisation of an 'end-to-end value chain' to improve access to essential medicines in underserved rural communities in Zambia. The resulting product 'Kit Yamoyo', won many awards and increased usage of the global recommendation from 1% of children in need to 48% within one year. 'Kit Yamoyo' is for home and can be safely bought in a local shop from trained shop-keepers already serving thier communities. It combines Oral Rehydration Salts, Zinc, soap for hand-washing and informational materials. The packaging not only protects the contents and makes the Kit attractive, but acts as a measuring vessel (200ml) for the newly designed 4g/200ml sachets of salt - adapted for home use. This means mothers/carers can mix ORS solution more easily in the home environment. The kit is delivered via the private sector value chain via micro-retailers. In addition, under a SUN funded project in remote rural areas, the Zambian Govenment has adopted and purchased a free, public sector version from our local manufacturing partner. The kit can now be bought in Zambia from the main supermarket chains. ColaLife takes no profit from any of these 'channels to market' and aims to withdraw once the product is self-sustaining (target mid 2018). ColaLife is 'open-sourcing' learning, data and product designs to other countries, targeting sub-Saharan Africa. Our objective is to stay small and catalyse those with the long-term responsibility to adopt, adapt and bring in innovations in child health.
