It’s the start of another school year in the Philippines, and children are already getting back to the routine of busy school days. For our street girls in Tahanan Sta. Luisa, going to a city public school is one of their biggest milestones to date.

Five girls are making the most out of their first foray into regular schools. Three are in regular elementary school, while two girls with special needs are enrolled in a special education school --- all within a radius of a few kilometers from Tahanan.

HEALING AND EMPOWERMENT

And Tahanan could not be prouder of the brave girls who take advantage of the opportunity to learn and excel. Tahanan believes that education empowers street girl survivors of physical and sexual abuse and helps them continue their journey towards healing and recovery.

“Admittedly, I was scared to make this move. I thought that considering the girls’ behavior, they might try to escape and go back to the ways of the street,” said Nellen, Acting Center Director and Head Social Worker.

“But I realized that going to regular schools and interacting with other children will help them build their character. This is a fresh start to a goal to reintegrate them into the community,” she added.

House parents bring the girls to school and pick them up from school. The girls are always excited to share their stories about learning and interacting with newfound friends.

“What the girls value most is the sense and feeling of belongingness. They are more inspired and motivated to do tasks, including doing their homework and chores at Tahanan,” shares Nellen.

JOURNEY TO RECOVERY

JOURNEY TO RECOVERY

Tahanan Sta. Luisa works with teenage girl’s survivor of abuse.  Tahanan girls transferred to their new permanent home in Antipolo. Place that they called their own, where they feel the spirit of security and love.

With the help of our generous donors, staff and volunteers, Tahanan girls continuously attending their psycho art therapy to process their negative past experience. Part of their activities is gardening.

The girls are planting vegetables that produces food crops for their consumption and ornamental plants for selling. Through gardening, the girls experience this kind of regular contact with nature and develop their skills in planning, problem solving and enhance their creativity. It was also observed that gardening improve their interactions with each other and fosters a sense of ownership and self-appreciation.

Healing from trauma through skills training

At the heart of Tahanan Sta. Luisa’s work is helping street girl survivors of abuse recover from trauma. The center realizes that the healing process requires endeavors to empower the street girls by harnessing their skills and potentials.

With the help of volunteers and partner organizations, Tahanan gives street girls opportunities to learn life skills that make them independent and productive. Short-term courses include lessons on arts and crafts, sewing, designing flower arrangements, t-shirt painting, using computers and the like. Cultural and recreational activities, such as music and sports, are also integrated in the program.

More than skills training, the activities motivate the girls to live out values as they go through their journey towards recovery. The girls enjoy flower arrangement workshops because it allows them to appreciate the colors and beauty of the flowers, and also explore different creative ways of designing and putting them together. The activity is also a way for them to relax while working.

Learning about sewing and the basics of computers are also activities that keep the girls at Tahanan busy and productive. Tahanan believes that investing in these endeavors go a long way in rebuilding the street girls’ self-worth. As they participate in the activities, they learn more about responsibility, accountability, and owning up to one’s work. Little by little, they are able to make informed decisions and gain self-confidence. Tahanan believes praise and positive reinforcement help encourage positive behavior among the girls.

Sports and recreation are equally important in building the girls’ character. From being timid girls, they are now able to express themselves and their emotions through creative activities like painting, singing, and dancing. Through the activities, Tahanan encourages the girls to go out of their comfort zones and communicate. The girls are also able to learn how to persevere and cooperate with other girls.  Tahanan hopes to invest more in skills training activities that not only enhance the girls potentials, but more importantly give them fighting chances for a better future.
