Foundation is poured and walls are going up!

New Club - Under Construction Now!
New Club - Under Construction Now!

A Club member named Sydney recently wrote about her experience at our Boys & Girls Clubs. I'd like to share with you what she said, because it really touched my heart and I think it will touch yours, too. Sydney writes, “When I walked into the Boys & Girls Club for the first time, I saw kids everywhere all grinning ear to ear. It seemed as though there were hundreds of rooms, filled with things devoted just for children. I was immediately filled with a sense of safety and excitement. As I started attending the Club regularly, it became a second home. I felt like I was safe there. No one looked down on me or treated me different because I was different. Without the Boys & Girls Club, I wouldn’t have found the light amidst the darkness.” Thank you for being a supporter of the Boys & Girls Club and making a difference to kids like Sydney.

Right now, our new Club is under construction - you can see in the photo here that the foundation is poured and the walls are starting to get framed up. Progress will move quickly from here and we expect that by late fall, we'll be opening the doors to our new Boys & Girls Club and a great future for kids like Sydney who need a light in the darkness and who need a place to feel safe. We're excited to be able to give 1,500 more kids a home away from home that's going to change their lives for the better. We can only do it because of you and your support!

As we reach the final months of construction, the need for your support is more urgent than ever. Would you consider making a gift today? Your $20 contribution could help us reach our goal of raising $1,500 more to fully fund our new playground. Your $50 contribution could buy several educational games for our activity center. Your $100 contribution will help us buy tables and chairs to equip the technology lab where kids will use 20 brand new laptops that were donated this month. A gift of any size makes a difference! Thank you for all you do to change the lives of children for the better - kids like Sydney thank you for showing them "the light amidst the darkness"!

You're making a difference

Thanks to your support of the Boys & Girls Club, some of the most at-risk kids at our Oak View Branch are getting a chance to do something pretty special this spring. These city kids are spending some time doing something they’ve never done before – hanging out with horses.

Why horses? Because spending time with horses is actually teaching kids a lot about how to make good choices and be a better person. In partnership with the Huntington Beach Police Department and the Huntington Park Equestrian Center, a dozen pre-teens and teens are participating in equine therapy. The kids chosen for this program were headed down the wrong path - toward gangs, drugs, and dropping out of school. Now, they’re spending time with police officers and horses each week and loving every minute of it.

From the first moment the kids walked into the paddock, they started learning. Lesson #1: If you respect the horses, the horses respect you. If you’re aggressive, the horses are aggressive. The kids learn that it’s the same with the people in their lives. Starting with that first lesson, kids work their way through a curriculum developed by Horse Nation with certified counselors. In a group therapy setting, kids talk openly about topics like anger, bullying, drugs, gangs, leadership, self-esteem, relationships, family, peace-keeping, and the possibilities for their futures. Then kids get a chance to “hug and groom” the animals and do group activities with the horses that illustrate the concepts they talked about in group therapy. It’s a unique way to steer kids who were starting down the wrong path away from drugs, violence and other dangerous behaviors. The kids are excited about it and Program Director Becky Sanchez says after just four weeks of the program, parents started telling her they were already seeing a big difference in their children’s behavior and choices.

A volunteer named Sue told us, “The social workers and Dr. Carole have the right touch with the kids. The kids don’t seem intimidated at all but open up to the questions asked. While I was there, they all participated in an activity where two horses were used to portray things they’d like to leave in the past and things they’d like to see in their future.  They divided the corral up the middle where the east side was the past and the west side was the present.  The kids wrote their words on duct tape and applied them to the past horse and the future horse. Some of the things I saw them write to leave in the past were anger, drugs and more. Things to see in the future were peace, smiles, relaxation. It was amazing.”

Thank you for helping turn things around for a kid who really needs help from you and the Boys & Girls Club. You’ve given a child a special experience that they’ll remember for their whole lives. It makes a big difference. Please consider making another gift today to sponsor a child at the Club. Your continued partnership helps us keep changing kids’ lives for the better.

Under Construction

Thank YOU for helping build the new Club!
Thank YOU for helping build the new Club!

We're making great progress on construction of the new Boys & Girls Club at Golden West College and expect to be open and helping kids and families by the end of the year!

The new Boys & Girls Club will serve more than 1,500 children each year. YOUR support is what makes it all possible! By supporting this project:

  • You are providing kids with year-round homework help, tutoring, STEM programs and technology access to help them succeed in school.
  • You are giving kids a safe space to grow, discover and create.
  • You are helping kids stay fit and healthy with sports leagues, fitness, cooking and nutrition classes.
  • You are helping kids explore their unique interests, whether it’s through participation in the Lego Engineers Club, community service clubs such as Torch Club, the Fine Arts Club or something completely brand new!
  • You are giving parents peace of mind, knowing that their children are loved and cared for while they’re busy at work or in school.
  • You are inspiring kids to go to college and helping moms and dads go back to school and complete their own education.

Our CEO Tanya Hoxsie says, “We are thrilled that the project will finally be finished this year. We will be able to serve kids from diapers to graduation all at one site! With the special location on a community college campus, moms and dads will be able to go back to school with on-campus care for their kids. And, kids who grow up on a college campus will learn to see going to college as a natural next step after high school.”

9-year-old Club member Kevin says he loves coming to one of our current on-campus programs that will be housed at the new Club because, "I'd never seen a college campus before." Your support opens kids' eyes to the possibility of a college education. Not just as something to dream about, but as something real that they can accomplish. The finished Boys & Girls Club Family Campus will change the lives of so many families for the better. Families will learn, grow, get stronger and achieve great futures - all because of you and your support.

Please consider making a gift today and sharing this project with your friends to help open the door to a new Boys & Girls Club and a great future for thousands more kids like Kevin!
