Young people passionate about coding

We are very happy with the progress in our School of Code and Programming now called ACADEMIA GEEK (Geek Academy). The call for applications has been very well received and there are many young people who are motivated to be part of the change.

There are 366 people interested in our offer and we are still motivated to increase our participants to bring the program to all the young people of the city. We started looking for students in November, now we are about to start the training sessions in February.

We were able to count with partners of different entities that work for closing the unemployment gaps in the city, and who will accompany young people in the employability process to enter the labor market, as well as for the development of interviews and interaction in work teams. We worked in campaigns to deliver information of our offer in all the communes, libraries, telecentres and community spaces.

Information Needs Assessments

Since we created this project in Global Giving, we have been preparing for the formal launch of the digital literacy activities for Venezuelans:

- Needs assessments workshops (see picture): we have conducted 3 workshops with migrant Venezuelans to understand their information needs. Thanks to these workshop we have learnt that most of them have mobile phones but no data plans, that most come with several members of the family and that the information they need is mostly related to health, education and jobs. We have also learnt that they have a lot of information needs and don't know where to access information. This will be the focus of our work at MAKAIA.

- App development: we are developing an app, in partnership with Alpha Lumen (Brasil) to help Venezuelan migrants find the information they need. The app will be launched in January for Beta testing,

- Organizations database: we are building a database of social and public sector organizations that are providing support to Venezuelan migrants and refuges.

- Partner Network: we have met with key organizations like the Red Cross, Acnur and other local and international organizations in order to coordinate local education efforts among migrants.

More Geek Girls thanks to MAKAIA

MAKAIA completed the training of 6 women passionate about technology and programming. They went through an intensive 8-week training (200 hours) in which they acquired and enhanced junior skills FrontEnd or BackEnd. In addition to soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, assertive communication and agile methodologies in design thinking that will allow them to connect with the labor market.

The courses were designed according to the needs of the technology sector, with which we seek to support and articulate our young participants in the achievement of their first job.

In technical training, our participants developed skills for the creation, design and programming of applications and websites, standing out as Frontend and Backend developers. Our goal is to achieve a group of only women by 2020, with a gender approach that allows women to step through the IT industry and stand out for their skills and talents in technology.
