Alejandra teaching her ICT course
Alejandra is a warm and intelligent 21 year old young woman with a hearing dissability. We first met Alejandra when she came to Makaia as a multimedia technician intern. Alongside other young tecnological leaders, Alejandra created a multimedia aid specifically designed for people with hearing dissabilites, to help them learn the basic parts of a computer and basic actions to use it. From that moment on, we witness how she took on every challenge with tenacity and grace, and she did everything in her power to fulfill herevery objective.
We have worked with her in various occasions since, and she is always a leader and above all, a great teacher, she is always striving to share all her knowledge with other young people with hearing dissabilities, specially information related to technology as key to generate inclusion.
Two years ago Alejandra permanently joined our team as facilitator of ICT apropiation processes for people with hearing disabilities. This is specially rewarding for us, because we have come to realize that peers and facilitators with disabilities themselves are the ideal teachers for other youth with dissabilities, to carry messages of development and inclusion.
With your help Alejandra will be able to teach more young people with dissabilities, to foster their inner strengh, independence and self worth and connect them with the world to build a better economic and socilal future for themselves.

Sofia on the right, sharing her fashion expertise
Here at Makaia we are proud to help truly remarkable people everyday, but some of them just hold a special place in our heart and we love to share their stories. Ana Sofía is one of those wonderful pople.
Ana Sofía is paraplegic, she is also the most cheerful person you will ever meet, has a great eye for fashion and handsawns beautiful handbags for a living. We met Ana Sofia in late 2011 when she participated in one of our training sessions aimed at giving entreprenenurs with disabilities digital tools and skills to strengthen their business ideas. Ana Sofia was empowered to further her hand bag business, participate in fairs and contest and use digital tools for online marketing of her designs.
Fuelled by her motivation to keep growing, she has continued learning after her trainning session and consolidated her skills, accesing a whole new world of personal and business oportunities through the use of technology. Today we are proud to say Ana Sofía's role in the classroom has changed. She is now the one that leads, teaching other entrepreneurs with dissabilities about her experience, sharing her knowledge and skills. She is guiding her students to access oportunnities through digital tools to better their professional and personal lives.
With your support we have organized other trainning sessions with Ana Sofìa as the leader, giving her the chance to share her story and her knowledge. Our funds are going towards teaching others like her, in the hopes that in the future we can have many beneficiaries that, like Ana Sofía can become future leaders and teachers.
In the link bellow you will find a video ( 2:37min ) were you can meet Sofía and witness how techonology changed her life, to learn a little more about what we do watch the whole video!

Team of facilitators that received the workshops
Thanks to your donations we organized two workshops to prepare teachers and facilitators from 9 different organizations on how to provide digital education for senior citizens. This would give them the opportunity to improve their community outreach, improve their organizational capacity and provide better services. The participants were made aware of the special needs and the importance of the inclusion of elderly people through ICT, using a pedagogical methodology called “SER ACTIVO” (be active).
The workshops allow social organizations to learn the best way to guide senior citizens to use digital tools to create “love networks” by keeping in touch with their loved ones, improve personal care and strengthen their self-worth.
The facilitators trained in these workshops, will in turn teach over 840 senior citizens from Antioquia, Chocó, Risaralda and Quindío (Colombian regions), who have little to no experience with computers. Teaching 30 hour courses in libraries, community centers that will provide them with technological skills giving the opportunity to discover new worlds improve their quality of life and increase their independence.
Your contributions allow facilitators and their organizations to improve the way they approach the communities they serve, making them better and more empathic towards the nneds of elderly people and with better tools to spread their knowledge. Thanks to your donations we create a ripple effect helping them to serve others better.
